Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Buckeye, AZ Physics tutoring
The student and I went over homework problems which dealt with simple harmonic motion, wave speed, Doppler effect, waves along a string, natural frequency, Hooke's Law, and period of a mass on a spring/ pendulum. Most of the problems were simple "plug and chug" type problems (all variables given except for solve for one); but there were a few which required an algebraic substitution (frequency for period, for example) before solving the main question. We started a 2nd set of homework / "quiz" questions as well. Some of these were simple definition type questions, and went into regular calculation type problems. Remainder of problems were for next session. Majority of equations were given by teacher on homework sheets - so it appears she does not need to memorize the more uncommon equations (although she should confirm this with her teacher well before the next exam).

The student has a test on forces and work this week. We first worked on a lab report he had to finish; we graphed and analyzed the data. We then reviewed concepts involving force and work. Next we practiced drawing free-body diagrams under scenarios I had provided on a worksheet. I had him finish the worksheet so that he was completely familiar with drawing free-body diagrams.

We covered Kirchhoff's rule for current, and voltage. Student especially struggled with algebra and solving for multiple equations. I did not leave her with extra problems because she has lots of homework assigned by her professor to practice. By practicing more physics problems her algebra and physics will improve.

The student and I went over practice Physics problems involving vectors and kinematics. We also went over the concepts behind these topics. She was very receptive, and by the end of the session, she was able to solve the problems correctly.

The student had just gotten back a physics quiz. Most of the points lost on it came from two misunderstanding carries through several problems. We discussed these two misunderstandings. As part of this, I asked her to solve a rather straight forward significant figures problem that had a not insignificant twist to it. From there we turned to adding vectors. We looked at this in two ways. First from the perspective of what equations were needed to break down and reform vectors. This reviewed Pythagorean theorem and the trigonometric identities represented by SOHCAHTOA. Also connected this topic back to the mathematics of going between Cartesian and polar coordinates. We then followed an example that required us to use both processes to solve the problem.

The student went through her physics homework, which was all about motion maps. We discussed how to read them, draw them, and interpret what they mean. She also worked on her math homework, which covered solving quadratic formulas by factoring and by extracting squares.
