I am currently attending Connecticut College studying Psychology with a minor in Applied Statistics. I know how hard it can be to learn new material and to find a tutor a student can connect with. In my studies, I have learned many techniques to stay organized and thoroughly understand course content, while being sensitive to the variation in how people learn differently. In addition to tutoring, my interests include fashion and beauty, dance, hiking, and skiing.

For as long as I can remember, I have always been enthusiastic about reading, writing and English. I spent a lot of time reading as a child and feel that it has been a benefit to my life. Reading is my passion! Through my education and experiences in life, I believe that I have more than enough tools to arm my students for their future. I am a dedicated and easy going person that enjoys working with children and adults all while attempting to have fun. My method of tutoring is relaxed and straight to the point. I believe in games when appropriate and hands on learning when necessary.I have a Bachelor's degree in English and soon a completed Master's degree in Reading and Literacy. I have worked with both children and adults on and off over the past 10 years. My tutoring subjects are reading (phonics, grammar, public speaking), writing, English, and ESL/ESOL areas and I look forward to working with you!!

Tutoring isn't just about knowing the subject matter--it's also about attitude! I firmly believe that the most important part of tutoring is recognizing that each student has individual needs, and with that, an individual approach to understanding difficult subject material. I am committed to discovering what method works best for you, and hope to help you succeed in overcoming whatever difficulties you may have.As for my background, I have been tutoring since high school. I have extensive experience tutoring in math, both as a private tutor and with a company. My BA (University of Arizona) and M. Phil. (Trinity College Dublin) degrees are respectively in Creative Writing and in English, and as such, I have a strong background in those subjects as well, which are my favorite to tutor--I enjoy exploring the precision of language to clearly communicate ideas. I offer tutoring at all levels in English, and up to algebra in math, as well as SAT and PSAT tutoring.Outside of school, I hope to become a professional writer some day. I also enjoy reading, listening to music, traveling, and e-sports.

I teach because there are few thrills greater than that "lightbulb" moment when a student, regardless of age, background or aspiration, looks up and says, "I get it now!" My job as a tutor is to find unique paths to lightbulb moments for each and every student, and in so doing, instill confidence and create opportunities for continuing success. All too often, a child's classroom experience becomes one of frustration and discouragement. It's not the fault of the school or the teacher, necessarily. Schools only receive a fraction of the support they need and teachers are overburdened by large class sizes, mandated testing and restrictive curricula. As an individual tutor, I can assess a child's exact needs and address those factors that inhibit a child's success with patience and creative approaches that nurture curiosity and impart a sense of discovery. For reluctant readers with lagging comprehension, who view the task as a chore, very often the problem is a weak vocabulary and a lack of contextual understanding. I encourage students to learn new words as an act of discovery and record each in their personal list, which they can take pride in enlarging. Contextual understanding can be achieved by offering stories and sharing the process of exploration and discovery, both online and in books.Writing, where many students have the greatest difficulty, should be enjoyed as an expressive activity, not dreaded as a mysterious and difficult task they will never master. I teach rules of grammar and the best practices for composition as parts of the process of writing, which empowers children to be their own editors and relieves then of the fear of making errors, or "saying something wrong." When children realize that their ideas and words are valid and that they have the power to improve them, writing assignments can become opportunities for expression and sources of accomplishment and pride. As a lifelong science nerd, I can help students who are having difficulty with science and math see that these subjects are neither abstract, nor useless. Science and math are, in fact, all around us and in everything we do and experience, from the simple physics of a subway ride or baseball game, to being able to use math to make predictions about weather or finances. I can show students how humans are part of the natural world and linked to every other living creature.Likewise, history needn't be regarded as a meaningless list of abstract dates and events that must be memorized. I can show students who don't think they care about history that all those events and dates are linked to the world we live in now. I teach that we are linked to the past through the people we know and share my own personal knowledge and experiences of times they think of as historical, but that I remember first hand. History is about stories and I can make that subject real and important by sharing some of my own stories. Most of all, I work to inspire students' own natural curiosity and desire to succeed. There are no wrong, bad or incorrect questions. I encourage all the students I work with to ask whatever questions they have during a time I set aside after our work is done and I promise them that I'll answer them all as best I can.

It is my belief that in order to teach one must be willing to perpetually learn, and the starting point of learning is humility. As Socrates famously states, "the only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." Once we realize our position we can truly make progress. Tutoring is all about patience, diligence, and encouragement. I am serious about my work, but I feel it is important to keep the mood light at times and build a solid rapport. It was during graduate school when I discovered my passion for tutoring. As a graduate assistant I tutored undergraduate students in deductive logic. The next step was volunteering for group called Seeds of Literacy and helping students prepare for the GED test. At this point I realized that tutoring was something I really enjoyed, and I began my professional tutoring career. I've been going strong for almost seven years. Most of my experience is with math, writing, and standardized test-prep, but I've done a bit of everything over the years. Additionally, I am comfortable with the social and natural sciences. In terms of ages I am best suited for the high school and college levels, although I do enjoy helping with younger students, too.I attended Baldwin Wallace College for my undergraduate degrees in economics and philosophy and Cleveland State University for graduate degree coursework in philosophy. Aside from the degrees I took a variety of courses including mathematics, logic, psychology, comparative religion, and the natural sciences. Nowadays I still read philosophy, especially the works of Plato and Kierkegaard. Other intellectual pursuits include studying ancient history (typically deep antiquity) as well as some cosmology, astronomy, and physics.I enjoy traveling, and I've been around Europe a few times, Mexico twice, visited Egypt once (easily my favorite trip), and a variety of trips here in the US. Travel is a wonderful activity not only for the sites and history one witnesses but also the cultures and individuals encountered -- most importantly, these things give us deeper perspective on ourselves and afford the opportunity for self-reflection and growth. That's ultimately what it's all about: improving ourselves, achieving our goals, and helping others. In my opinion, tutoring perfectly embodies these principles and any good tutor will constantly strive for these ideals with every student.

I completed my freshman and sophomore years at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in the spring of 2015, where I double majored in English and Finance. I worked two years for Rutgers Upward Bound TRIO program, in which I helped students ranging from freshmen to seniors in high school learn and practice the fundamentals of writing, reading comprehension, essay writing, SAT Math, SAT Writing, and SAT Reading. In the summer of 2015, I moved to the Bay Area, where I am currently taking fall semester courses at Berkeley City College. Although It was initially hard for me to swallow the stark reality of uprooting the school I loved and thrived in, as well as the friends and family that had nurtured my growth in the beautiful Garden State, the prospect of attending a more prestigious Californian university to complete my undergraduate and (hopefully) law school studies was too great of an opportunity not to take a leap of faith for. Because I, too, am a student chasing his dreams, nothing gives me more satisfaction and hope in helping others to not only become more comfortable with their studies, but also become passionate in their strides toward their academic and personal goals.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Sussex in Brighton, U.K., where I received an M.A. in Modern and Contemporary Literature, Culture, and Thought. I received my B.A. in English and History from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts in 2011. Having grown up in Alabama, completed an undergraduate degree in Massachusetts, and a Master's in the U.K., I have tutored students from a broad range of backgrounds in an even broader range of subject areas. I have worked with students in subjects ranging from History and Government to Reading, Writing, and Grammar. I am passionate about helping others to realize their academic potentials, and I believe that my most important responsibility as a tutor is helping my students to develop the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills that will allow them to excel in all subject areas.

First, some select information about myself. I graduated from the University of Arizona with dual degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Dance. I am a professional dancer here in New York City, working with various project-based companies, generally in contemporary or contemporary ballet work. I have been tutoring, in various forms and fashions, since 2008 with organizations like National Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi (the original Engineering Honor Society), as well as freelance personal tutoring. I have two overarching aspirations in life. I would like to understand the world, and especially the people in it. I would also like to spread that knowledge, subsequently inspiring people to seek their own truths.Tutoring is a beautiful composition of art and science. One must understand both the material and the student. Not just simple comprehension, but in what manner the comprehension is reached. I enjoy breaking down problems into logical sub-units. First, the underlying equations (or axioms, or vocabulary, or processes) must be understood, preferably on an instinctual level, as it is easier to remember ideas when they make sense at a core level. Then these ideas are applied to the problem, in order to unlock the solution. Generally, when students are having trouble with a problem (or type of problem) there is a non-sequitur somewhere in that process. My job, which is quite fun in this way, is to identify and correct this misunderstanding. One of the best feelings in the world is helping someone see the underlying beauty governing the world and humans. Understanding why and how things work is beautiful.I am qualified in a variety of subjects, as befits my rather bizarre dual degree choice, from AP Computer Science to the Biological Sciences section of the MCAT. And if you need help with your ballet skills, I can definitely help there as well!
