How can a Biology tutor help you?

Biology is the study of life, down to a living thing's cellular structure. It can be an interesting course for students who find science fascinating. Whether you're taking biology to move on to more advanced scientific classes and a career in the field, or you simply need to get through the course to move on in your academic career, a professional tutor will be able to potentially help you improve. Varsity Tutors will match you with a biology tutor in Pflugerville who will motivate you to reach beyond your goals in biology.

The key concepts in biology include a large amount of memorization of terms, as well as understanding how different scientific cycles work. You may need to know the ins and outs of photosynthesis, homeostasis, or cellular respiration, in order to do well in your course. Whatever concepts seem to be giving you trouble, an expert tutor could break them down into simple terms and explanations you can truly understand. A dynamic tutor in Pflugerville could help you learn to love biology.

We went over nomenclature and how to draw structures of alkenes and alkynes. She seemed to be comfortable with this material as she answered the questions with little help or questions. Then we went over intermolecular forces again and learned that most alkenes and alkynes are hydrophobic and that they can mix with most alkanes. She seems to be understanding what can and cannot mix with each other by looking at the intermolecular forces. Chirality was looked at next. I plan to bring a molecular structure kit so that she can have a better visual appearance of what a chiral structure is in the next session.

We discussed the properties of ether functional groups. The spectroscopy of ethers (IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR). We worked on the mechanisms for cleavage of ethers using BBr3, HBr and HI. We also went over the opening of epoxides under acidic conditions and basic conditions. The products that you get in these reactions are complementary to each other. We worked two spectroscopy problems for the students homework. I showed how to approach these problems systematically. First degree of unsaturation, then look for functional groups in IR, then fragments form 1H NMR and C13 NMR then piece the fragments together.

The student and I continued to review material for his first test, which is on Tuesday of this week. He seems to be very well prepared and has completed several practice exams. At the beginning of our session, he and I reviewed a list of questions that he compiled during his practice. Then, together, we completed a sheet of questions on aromaticity. I have provided him with four Exam 1 practice tests, and he has worked on all of these. I consider him to be very well prepared for his test and expect that he will do very well.
