Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Session Six Tutoring Review During the student's sixth session we focused on Tutoring Goal(s) 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6, which involved problem solving, reinforcing studying algebra, developing problem solving techniques, building her confidence, reviewing her homework, and reviewing for her upcoming examination. Below is a synopsis of the topics we reviewed: We reviewed slope intercept form and how to use this form to graph equations. We compared two given equations and learned how to recognize parallel and perpendicular lines by their equations and plotting their graphs. We reviewed ordering terms from least to greatest from points. We worked on word problem set-up, creation, variable identification, and solving word problems. We completed the student's review for her upcoming exam. Student's Homework and our Plan for Session VII: Our next session is scheduled for Tuesday at 6pm. I asked the student to review her homework for tonight and write out any areas that she still may feel unsure or confused about. I asked her to take the time to review the chapters in her book along with her lecture notes. I asked her to go over her exam review carefully and focus on word problem solving techniques that we discussed today. Tuesday we will have a brief overview of any concepts that she may not understand from her homework, and then we will focus on new problems from any assigned homework. Notes: She is doing very well in algebra! She should do very well on her exam if she moves slowly through her problems and reviews the material as she solves her problems well with minimal guidance. I still believe it would benefit her to put in some extra study time in reviewing the concepts outlined in her textbook to reinforce her practice."
"Worked on homework, units 8.5 and 8.6. Included rationalizing the denominator and solving equations with radicals."
"The student and I went over the problems that she missed on her last test. I then went over implicit differentiation with her. She was confused on the topic at first, but by the end of the session she seemed to understand the concept much better. She understood how to do the problems."
"Went over determinants and inverses of matrices. The student just needed a little review on how to calculate an inverse from the original matrix. I showed him how to use the identity matrix as well as standard row operations to find the inverse. We then went over an example he had trouble with and performed the operations by hand which we then checked with a calculator. We were able to get the correct inverse. I then showed him the true purpose of the determinant and how it shows whether a matrix has an inverse. We went over a couple of examples to make sure he had a handle of the topics."
"The student has a 2 day test next week and we will have a few sessions to prepare. Today we focused mostly on graphing of sine and cosine functions and their transformations. He was comfortable with the basics, but there were a few areas where he was getting confused. We worked on problems from his review packet and stopped any time we hit a difficult area. By the end of the session, he had a good grasp on sine and cosine graphs. We will be meeting on Monday to continue the review."
"The student and I met for the first time to try and get her PreCalc grade back on track. We began in trying to strengthen her understanding of the current material (decay and growth). We went through how it pertains to real life and the reasoning behind the equations. She demonstrated the skills and seems to be solid in the process."
