I have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with a mathematics minor. I also have a master's degree in mechanical engineering and have been a practicing engineer for the past 21 years. After college, I've taught math and science in a Jr. High school for three years and found it to be a very rewarding experience. In the graduate school, I taught and tutored as a teaching assistant for the undergraduate physics lab course. I've continued to enjoy the joy of teaching and sharing through private tutoring. Even working as an engineer, I welcomed opportunities to mentor junior engineers to help them grow and sharpen their skills as engineers. I love to see the joy in the students' faces when they finally understand the concepts that have been eluding them and find the confidence in themselves. I accomplish that by finding out the gaps in the students' mastery of the subject matter and exploring ways to help students understand them at their pace. I am a current student at Barnard College, Columbia University. I am on the pre-med track with a major in biology. I am also interested in economics and American history. I find that patience is the most important attribute of a tutor because I believe that in due time and with the right assistance everyone can learn.

I had to conduct recitation and laboratory for multiple sections of students (between 20-30 at a time). It was one of the best parts of my week. I really enjoyed working with the students and trying to clarify any problems they had with the material. Yes, it would get to be quite frustrating at times because you have to repeat a law or concept 5 times in 5 different ways, or students just weren't paying attention. But to see a student finally achieve clarity and sense the relief of pressure in them made it well worth it. I enjoy making connections with my students. I feel it makes it much easier to convince them of the importance of a given topic. As a younger individual myself, I find it fairly easy to make a connection with any student, or to at least make them comfortable. My style is laid back, and many of my students have been appreciative of that.

In college, I studied both science and art. Teaching is similar to both science and art in that it exists at the intersection of theory and practice. I have tutored college biology, taught English in South Korea, and STEM in Manhattan and art in Cambridge. I enjoy the challenge of presenting information in a manner that will engender understanding and communicate a passion for the material beyond the textbook or the test. I have worked as a Web Engineer and Creative Director in Silicon Valley, California (CA) and enjoy coding in Javascript and Python with artistic elements from Adobe products like Photoshop, Illustrator, and others. I work as a lawyer and a legal advocate from my home office while schooling my son online in academics with extracurriculars through a local adventure club I run with five other families for weekly recreational outdoor adventures alongside socializing with a local network of thirty four families to seventy two children. I teach with a singular focus on the best interests of my students and will often advocate for my students -- particularly my special needs students who are not neurotypical -- beyond my classroom though writing recommendation letters and encouraging my students to apply for university programs or other educational opportunities for which they may not otherwise think they qualify. I was also a part of the women's outdoor track and field team and was co-chair of multiple student groups on campus. I tutored my classmates in English, writing, public speaking, economics, and business primarily but have assisted with other subjects as well, such as statistics.I truly enjoy working with students as it is most rewarding to help students reach their full academic potential, which is not always realized in a classroom setting alone. While I tutor a range of subjects, I am most passionate about tutoring writing because good writing is truly foundational and essential in so many areas of life. I also enjoy teaching students good study habits and organizational techniques that are conducive to greater learning and set students up for higher academic achievement and success.
