I currently work in Brooklyn in the New York City Public Schools. I am a Special Education teacher and am currently teaching in a 3rd grade classroom. I have experience with students from ages 4-14, and students of mixed backgrounds and disabilities. I believe that every child deserves an excellent education and the support needed to achieve their goals. Writing is a passion of unexplainable intensity to me. Every day I think about the ways I can be a better writer, which often makes me a better thinker, and that's what I desire for everyone I tutor to also feel. I can tutor calculus, college algebra, college physics, differential equations, high school physics, linear algebra, math, and general physics. I was often the student that other students counted on for help with homework and studying. I have 6 weeks of experience teaching (and assisting in teaching) engineering to a class of high school students for a summer high school program at Columbia. Practicing the material and assignments in advance, anticipating the points that would confuse students, reorganizing the lesson plans and assignment instructions to be as clear and intuitive as possible, and then continuing to adjust how I taught in response to questions and struggles of students was a rewarding challenge. Here I work with citizens and elected officials to advance the development of the project. I lead presentations and information sessions to educate the public on the process, timeline, and project.I previously served the people of New York as a Policy Advisor to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. Where I developed policy proposals for the Governor's annual legislative agenda and budget. I also worked to translate these complex policies into simple to understand concepts for communicating with the public.I came to public service by way of Manhattan Community Board 4, where I served from 2010 to 2016. I was chosen to be co-chair of the Transportation committee, and elected Second Vice Chair of the board.I am the former Vice President and current board member of the Chelsea Hell's Kitchen Coalition for Pedestrian Safety (CHEKPEDS).During a previous professional life in communications, I worked at the United Nations International School on digital media. In this role I worked closely with students, faculty, and parents on special projects.My work in communications lead to becoming the founder and currently the managing member, of Policomm Digital Communications Group.

While working towards my Chemistry degree at the University of Oklahoma, I worked as a chemistry, biology, and Spanish tutor both through the University and via self-employment. It has always been my greatest passion to help someone navigate with ease a subject which they have previously regarded as difficult or stressful. I would describe my tutoring philosophy as one where I do less talking than necessary--it's my belief that engaging my student in this way will improve their learning exponentially, while also making the session considerably more enjoyable! Although history is a large portion of what I teach on a daily basis, I also focus on reading and writing skills since many of my students are below grade level at this point.In order to motivate my students I employ various tactics to differentiate my instruction. Firstly, it is vital that students can relate to the subject which they are struggling with; otherwise it becomes tedious and irrelevant for them to learn. History is a topic which lends itself to being able to draw parallels to modern day society. By using comparisons to my students lives I am able to engage them in the subject and provide them with the capacity to learn the material.Writing and reading are also challenges for students I am currently working with or have taught in the past. I believe firmly in what I call "text coding." I encourage my students to read through a passage and underline words they are unfamiliar with and then rephrase many sections of the writing in their own words. This allows students to break down a text in a way which will allow them to understand the meaning and also grammatical aspects of the literature.There are many other methods which I use to teach, but one which is very important is the notion that practice makes perfect! If students can fall into a pattern they feel comfortable with then they will gain skills and knowledge that they need to succeed.I love working with students of all ages and helping them to reach their potential, otherwise I would not be studying to become a teacher! I am patient, understanding and truly believe that no question should go unanswered.

After taking extensive math and science courses, I later realized that anyone can learn anything through practice and repetition. Majoring in biology was not easy and most of my time was spent teaching myself the material. Independent studying is good because you come up with different ways to learn the material, which is helpful when teaching someone else. The rest of my time was spent participating in study groups, where colleagues and I would teach each other. From my previous experience as a student and as a tutor, I have learned that understanding a subject depends greatly on how the material is presented. That is why it is important for me to be able to adapt to the student's preferred teaching style or one that they are most comfortable with. Once you figure that out, learning becomes fun!
