Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Microbiology Tutoring review by Justin in Lowell, MA
We had a continuation of our session on Sunday and did a very broad overview of many of the chapters in his review book. We went over topics of biochemistry/molecular biology, physiology, cell division, genetics, evolutionary classifications, cell respiration, some heredity, and the cell as a whole. The student isn't struggling with a particular topic or concept but rather the sheer amount of information that he needs to review before Monday. He feeling the pressure but is also looking forward to the challenge. As we are continuing with the overall review of the material, I told him to continue watching the videos I've sent him to refresh his memory and pick up a few things to note for his exam. Although we did not cover everything, we are meeting again throughout the week to review and practice more for his exam on Monday.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Matjaz in Lowell, MA
Today we covered the complete fluid dynamics chapter from the Physics 2 book, including theory and a few exercises of each type. Problems included calculating buoyancy in different liquids, then calculating velocity of fluid leaking out of a reservoir, and calculating velocity of sprinkler water. Formulas used included the continuity formula, the Bernoulli's equation, the formula for buoyancy force. Strategies included drawing the picture of the problem before tackling it conceptually or numerically. Then drawing the free body diagram and external forces on the object. Only then the strategy would be to connect the quantities in the problem via the known applicable formulas. The student has a very positive attitude toward the materials, and is eager to fill any gaps in his knowledge so he is well prepared for the test in June. The student has good knowledge of AP Physics 1 subject matters. We finished this lesson with a quick overview of static electricity problems, as well as problems including electric potential and electric potential energy and voltage.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Aditi in Lowell, MA
We had a productive session, which was a comprehensive review of the genetics unit to prepare for the student's test tomorrow. We reviewed all the genetics unit worksheets (conceptual and problem solving), as well as a new dihybrid cross worksheet to practice different types of questions that could possible be tested. We also reviewed a list of test taking tips, created after reviewing the student's previous test, and he applied these tips to successfully complete a practice genetics test at the end of the session. He is comfortable and confident with the material and calculations, and I would encourage him to continue reading questions carefully, and writing down genotypes carefully. He should have a good test day tomorrow!

Microbiology Tutoring review by Talia in Lowell, MA
The student needed help with her worksheet on electric circuits today so we dedicated our entire time to this topic. For nearly the entire session, she seemed to really grasp the material and understand the fundamental basics of circuits. While we were on complex circuits, I drew her another similar problem to reinforce what she just learned, and she did great on it.

After another hour and a half working on the student's research paper, I think we finally have it to near-final status! The paper he ended up with has some good insights that should capture the teacher's attention in a positive way. He has some minor edits to make and needs to get all of the citations done for homework. His final exam is in two weeks and we need to begin a comprehensive study of everything from this semester. He also has an extra credit assignment to do. The final exam needs to be our primary focus!

Microbiology Tutoring review by Justin in Lowell, MA
The student and I went over her section review on gravity. The section covered acceleration due to gravity, air resistance, and terminal velocity, all which I helped her understand in more practical ways than her textbook did. She understood the concepts well and answered the section review at the end with little help from me. With the time we had left, I helped her with some geometry concepts she was having trouble with (the Pythagorean Theorem and special right triangles).
