I am a graduate of Princeton University and Louisiana State University (LSU). I received an undergraduate degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton and a Ph.D. in Biology from LSU. As part of my doctoral work, I completed all coursework for a Ph.D. minor in Experimental Statistics. I have more than 20 years of experience conducting research and teaching biology. I have worked as a research biologist with the US Forest Service and US Geological Survey and as a biology professor at the University of Puerto Rico and Eastern Kentucky University. For the past 8 years, I have taught biology at a public high school in Mississippi as well as at two local community colleges. I am passionate about biology, in particular ecology, environmental science and botany. As a teacher and tutor, I always focus on creating an environment that is student-centered and promotes student success. I feel that a solid background in science is essential for success in many careers, and I enjoy working with students to help them achieve their goals. In my free time, I like to spend time outside hiking, canoeing, and birdwatching.

I am a graduate of Gonzaga University and received my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in research. Since graduating, I have traveled around the West coast working in various hands-on education and research positions. This included volunteering as a docent at a wildlife refuge in Nevada, educating aquarium guests on whale watch cruises in Southern California, and performing environmental monitoring and outreach in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. While my recent experiences provide me a deep understanding and love for Biology and Ecology related subjects, I have intensive writing experience from college that fuels my passion for writing and language, a passion that I use when preparing students to understand and succeed on the ACT. I believe that even the most complex scientific concepts can be broken down into easily understood ideas, and hope to impart this belief to my students. In my free time, I enjoy hiking around the Pacific Northwest, wildlife watching, playing music, and the occasional board game with friends.

I am excited to continue to do so after moving back to Illinois! I especially enjoy tutoring because it allows a closer connection with the student than in a large classroom setting. I enjoy sharing my experience and enthusiasm with student while also helping them progress toward their academic goals. Outside of my love of Biology and Spanish I also love playing tennis, rock climbing, watching movies and TV and I have a new found enthusiasm for biking.

When I was young, I used to hate swimming at the beach. The idea of sharks moving around under the waves where I could not see them made me scared to go into the water. As I grew up, however, and began to learn about the different sharks that lived off the shores of my home in Massachusetts, USA, I became less and less scared and more and more fascinated with how and why sharks move around in this underwater world. I began to ask questions like, what do sharks do under the water when we cannot see them? and, where do sharks like to go and why? As a marine scientist now I try to answer these questions. Because sharks live and breathe under the water and can swim long distances and go deep into the ocean, further and deeper than I could follow by myself, to study how these animals move and behave underwater I have to use lots of different types of technology. Sometimes I use underwater robots that can follow the sharks down deeper than humans can go, and that can carry things like cameras so I can directly see what the sharks are doing. In my work now, I use special tags that send out signals every few seconds with a unique name that identifies individual sharks. When the shark swims close enough to receivers placed out in the ocean, these receivers are able to hear and record the tag name, telling where and when individual sharks are present in different areas of the ocean. One thing I love about being a shark scientist is that I can follow sharks all over the world. First, I followed the movement of sharks all the way over in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of the USA. Then I moved to Tasmania, Australia, and I followed young sharks as they move around off the coast of New South Wales. Now I am back home in Massachusetts and working on publishing my research.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students often struggle with visualizing microscopic marine organisms, understanding complex ecosystems and food webs, and connecting theoretical concepts like photosynthesis and nutrient cycling to real ocean environments. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps break down these abstract concepts using diagrams, animations, and real-world examples—like explaining how phytoplankton form the base of ocean food chains or how coral bleaching relates to water temperature changes. A tutor can also help you develop scientific reasoning skills, not just memorize facts, so you understand the "why" behind marine processes.
Marine Biology lab courses require hands-on skills like identifying species, analyzing water samples, interpreting microscope observations, and writing scientific reports. Expert tutors can help you understand lab procedures before you enter the lab, interpret your results afterward, and develop strong scientific method practices. They can also guide you through data analysis, help you draw accurate conclusions from your observations, and improve your ability to communicate findings clearly—skills that are just as important as the lab work itself.
Understanding concepts is far more valuable than memorization alone. While Marine Biology does require learning species names, anatomical structures, and ecological terms, rote memorization won't help you tackle essay questions, lab scenarios, or exams that ask you to apply knowledge to new situations. Personalized tutoring focuses on building deep understanding—connecting how a fish's gill structure relates to its oxygen absorption, or how ocean currents distribute nutrients and larvae. When you truly understand the concepts, the important facts stick naturally, and you're prepared for any question format.
The best Marine Biology tutors combine subject expertise with the ability to explain complex topics clearly. Look for someone who can visualize abstract concepts (like ocean thermoclines or bioluminescence), connects theory to real-world marine applications, and understands your specific curriculum—whether that's high school biology, AP Marine Science, or college-level oceanography. A strong tutor will also ask questions to check your understanding rather than just lecturing, and adapt explanations based on how you learn best.
This depends on your starting point and goals. Students working with a tutor on specific challenging topics (like photosynthesis or marine adaptation) often see improvement in 4-6 weeks of consistent sessions. If you're preparing for an AP Marine Science exam or comprehensive course, a longer commitment of several months allows time to build deep understanding and practice applying concepts across different scenarios. Most students benefit from weekly sessions, though some find bi-weekly sessions work well once they've grasped foundational concepts and have strategies for independent study.
Absolutely. Marine Biology increasingly emphasizes real-world applications like coral bleaching, ocean acidification, overfishing, and marine conservation. Personalized instruction helps you understand both the underlying science (how CO₂ affects ocean pH, how warming waters affect species distribution) and the broader implications. Tutors can help you connect classroom concepts to current events and research, develop critical thinking about environmental challenges, and prepare for discussions or projects that require applying marine biology to conservation issues.
Scientific writing requires more than knowing the content—you need to explain concepts clearly, support claims with evidence, and use proper terminology. Expert tutors can help you structure essays, develop clear thesis statements, practice explaining complex processes (like osmoregulation or chemosynthesis) in writing, and review your work for accuracy and clarity. They'll also help you strengthen scientific reasoning by teaching you how to interpret data, draw justified conclusions, and think critically about marine research—skills that improve both your grades and your understanding of the subject.
