English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Kathryn in Bartlett, TN
Today we continued working on the alphabet. The student is more confident in singing the abc song by himself, but he trips up on the letters from L - P. He also has difficulty pronouncing Y. After practicing the song a few times, I wrote all the letters in capital and lowercase to help him see the letters as we sang. I then pointed to the letters, asking him which letter it was. This is an area where he needs additional help, and we will continue working on it. I asked him to trace the letter A to get him to practice writing, and I think this can be helpful going forward.

The student practiced his short vowel sounds and reviewed the silent e rule. He also read a book and sequenced the events in the story.

We reviewed the student's spelling homework and wrote sentences for all the new words he learned. We also touched on cursive. (One of his homework assignments is to write his name in cursive.) We also went over the book he is reading. He completed all the homework I asked him to do and when I asked him questions about the chapter he read, he was able to answer everything specifically. He's doing very well.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Heidi in Bartlett, TN
This was my first session with this student. We worked on her paper for British Literature. She's writing about Huxley's "Brave New World" and the historical context that informed and inspired it. Before the session, she emailed me her paper and the assignment details, as well as some comments her teacher had written on her draft. I made some editing suggestions using track changes on Word and sent those back to her. We talked about her works cited page first, and I made some formatting suggestions. Then we identified her thesis and the main points in her paper. We began to move through the paper one paragraph at a time. Her teacher said she had used too many long quotes, so we worked on rewording some of the ideas and shortening the quotations. She did a good job of this. We made it through two pages of the paper and decided to continue working on it in a second session on Thursday.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Regina in Bartlett, TN
The objective of this first session was to determine where the student (6 years old) was reading level wise. She was struggling most with sounding out new words and blends. Her attitude toward reading was very energetic, she could not wait to read to me and show me how well she could read. We worked on reading strategies with compound and new words. I requested her mom have the student read at least 20 minutes a day to her (preferably longer if the student is willing). She read to me for the complete hour without wanting to take a break; I feel at 6 years old this is a big win for both of us.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Adriane in Bartlett, TN
The student and I worked a little bit on her new writing project: a book about Tasmanian wolves. She remains interested in reading if she can have a creative role in producing her reading material. Her creativity is great. I'm still trying to find ways to help her appreciate other writers' creativity as well, and introduce her to the idea of leisure reading. It's very important to her that she chooses what she reads, so the trick lies in finding level-appropriate material that is also reliably interesting to her.
