While obtaining my Bachelors at Brown University (in Geology) and my Masters at Colorado State University (in Watershed Science), I have uncovered a love not only for academic topics I learned, but for teaching those topics to those around me. Most recently, I was a Teaching Assistant for a watershed course at Colorado State University, in which I enjoyed leading laboratory sessions and working through problem sets with undergraduate students. My school experience was difficult, as I struggled with ADHD, and ended up leaving high school early by passing a proficiency test. I love working with students who are struggling, because I have an appreciation for how difficult and boring school can be, but I also have come to truly appreciate the value and importance of education. I believe it's up to the teacher to make learning fun and rewarding, and that is what I strive for in all my lessons.In my teaching jobs, I work with students with learning and emotional disabilities. I have also run after school enrichment programs for gifted students that have received commendations from state officials. I specialize in tailoring instruction to the learner's strengths, particularly for more visual learners. My instruction on fractions has been called the clearest the interviewer had seen.I am a generalist up through the high school level in content. In math I can teach up through Geometry effectively, and I have a great method for writing essays up through the college level. I've taught reading from the Kindergarten Phonics up through middle school and high school literature. My greatest asset as a tutor and teacher is my patience with my students.In my free time I love to read, play board and tabletop games and bicycle. I've coached soccer, and enjoy playing soccer and watching the Portland Timbers.

I am currently on the lengthy path to becoming a professor. In 2019, I finished a bachelor's degree in biology, graduating summa cum laude. Returning for up to 8 more years of school in a completely different science that required more school did not seem enticing immediately after graduation. What changed?After graduating, I experienced the full extent of what the teaching profession should be. My professors began pouring their free time into helping me with anything they could. The mentoring they provided me shaped my future, and I want to share this kind of learning experience with others.Fast fo ward to now, and I have finished a master's in data analytics and am almost done with another in integrative biology. I will be starting a PhD in mathematics very soon. In my career, I want to be more than just a source of information. In our technological society, information about STEM can be found anywhere. What cannot be found anywhere is a teacher who will work with students as individuals, invest in them, and care about their progress. This is what I strive to be.

I am a current student attending graduate school at Columbia University. I graduated from Yale University in 2011 and upon graduation, joined Teach for America, a non-profit organization whose mission is is to help close the current opportunity gap that exists in classrooms across the U.S. I taught 1st 2nd and 3rd grade for three years and while teaching, earned a Master's Degree in Education. In addition to being a classroom certified teacher, I have also tutored older students in SAT test preparation, as well as classroom content such as calculus and physics. I tutor a wide range of subjects, ranging from elementary education to high school Mathematics, science and Spanish. I enjoy teaching and my work is about my students, who have the potential to achieve at the highest levels, and their parents, who want the best for them. Math and English were my two favorite subjects that age--and still are--and watching my students' gears spin and make new connections was vastly rewarding. When working with students, it is important to acknowledge what their foundation is before overwhelming them with information. Taking the time to ensure they understand concepts yields the most success. Working together, be it in the classroom, on the field, or on stage, always generates positive results.
