String Theory Tutoring FAQ

Anyone studying string theory for the first time can be easily overwhelmed by the field due to its highly theoretical nature and specialized vocabulary. Unlike areas of physics like Newtonian mechanics, which can be modeled by familiar scenarios like a ball rolling down a hill or an object falling to the ground, string theory conceptualizes all of the particles in the universe as theoretical one-dimensional strings. By oscillating in different ways, these strings can produce the various types of particles we observe. These strings can be either open or closed, and split and combine in a variety of ways. It is also theorized that these strings are attached to two-dimensional membranes, or branes. Many physicists think that string theory shows promise for uniting the small-scale, particle-based theory of quantum physics and the theory of relativity, a large-scale theory of time and gravity, under a single set of theoretical principles.

Another aspect of string theory is supersymmetry, or the idea that each type of particle in the universe can be categorized as either a boson or a fermion. Pairs of various kinds of these particles allow certain equations to work because when pairs of particles are represented as variables in equations and assumed to cancel each other out, the equations yield realistic results. While many of these particles have not been actually observed because they exist at extremely high-energy states, the fact that the equations necessitate them has led physicists to conduct experiments attempting to observe them. Additionally, string theory posits additional dimensions of the universe beyond the three plus one that has been observed, as well as the idea of these unobserved dimensions being compactified.

The student and I covered chapters 4, 6, and the rest of 8. I notice that he seems to realize a bit more when he goes on tangents, and comes back to the topic at hand fairly quickly. He showed me his returned late assignments, and I see that his grade is better on each assignment. I also taught him a way to memorize the geological time scale, in case that is on the test. I left him to finish some of his late assignments and also go over what he needs to study for his test on Wednesday.

At this session, the student and I began reviewing for his biology. We completed worksheets in DNA, structures of cells, cellular mitosis and meiosis, and circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems. Although he has many more subjects to complete, I believe this was a good start for our first session. With some more reviewing, the student will have the knowledge to do very well on this standardized test. I asked that he memorize the various terms associated with translation and transcription as he was a little weak in this area.

With the endocrine unit completed, the student and I turned out focus on getting a head start on human urogenital biology. During our time together, we spent a large portion of our time talking about the human kidney and the relevant functions that each compartment plays. Since this material is much more difficult and novel than what we were accustomed to, the student had some difficulty grasping the ideas. However, he vowed to do some studying and attempt to internalize the concepts prior to the final.

The student and I began reviewing for her final exam. We refreshed on transcription and translation, which she remembered well except for a few details of the mechanics. We discussed the Crick's experiments, which determined the 3-base reading frame of mRNA translation, and the experiment that determined which codons corresponded to which amino acids. We also briefly reviewed amino acid structure and mitosis and meiosis from the previous semester. She was having the most trouble remembering how to complete dihybrid problems in genetics. We reviewed example problems of these as well as pedigrees. Before next session, she is going to do practice problems with probabilities and any other math-related problems, so we can work on any areas of weakness she has.

In this session we went through the student's practice exam in Biology and made sure that he had all of the correct answers written down. We also went through his Health notes and made sure that everything was organized for his open note final. He did really well in this session and I am confident that he will be well prepared for this final exams.
