IB Physics HL Tutoring FAQ

Students taking International Baccalaureate Physics HL are expected to master difficult physics concepts and to construct insightful experiments and hypotheses. Whereas students taking the Standard Level IB Physics course are only expected to learn about two categories outside of the IB curriculum's core content, the Higher Level version of the class covers eight of these additional categories in detail. In addition, the IB Physics HL exam is an hour and a half longer than the comparable IB Physics SL examination. Both exams, however, require students to demonstrate advanced reasoning skills beyond simple conceptual mastery, and both place a great deal of emphasis on the ability to articulate the principles behind answer choices. Thus, students will likely not meet with success simply by memorizing relevant formulas and learning to calculate answers by rote. Succeeding in IB Physics HL requires a student to cultivate a deep understanding of course material from the first day of class until he or she sits for final exams.

Along with being associated with prestige, IB courses are known for their rigorous course content. Because of this, only the most exceptional students are permitted to enroll in an IB Degree program. Despite being a program for gifted and talented learners, mastering IB courses, whether they are SL or HL, can be demanding and overwhelming. If you are one of the many students who struggles to make sense of the material presented in class, you could benefit from private tutoring.

During this session, we started covering problems involving acceleration, but more importantly, we started with the basic equation for acceleration and manipulated it in order to derive the other kinematic equations pertaining to acceleration. Once the student had a grasp of the equations, we went through and solved some practice problems in which he had to determine what the appropriate equation was for the problem. Additionally, I have kept a very strong focus on how to set up problems, making sure all his variables, constants, and unknowns are labeled and his math is very neat.

We covered waves, bouncy, Doppler effect, simple pendulum, Torque, and Bernoulli's equation. We then went through some of her problem areas in problem sets to ensure that they were completed correctly, and then I suggested for her to go through them one more time and work them out on her own again. We also worked through a few questions she wasn't able to answer correctly on a quiz from her pre-calculus class to ensure her understanding.

We talked about resonance for the first hour. The student wanted help with concepts, so I was focused on giving her demonstrations of resonance rather than working through problems. We spent the last 30 minutes discussing old material that had given her trouble last semester. We talked a little bit about tension, and we worked an example problem with a static equilibrium situation.

We went over advanced muscle physiology, going into how muscles are stimulated to contract and relax. This includes understanding of the major anatomical structures within a myofibrils and- t-tubules, SR, calcium channels, sarcomeres, and the actin filaments/myosin heads. We talked about how neuromuscular junctions are stimulated to initiate muscle contraction and how the action potential is propagated through the tubule system of motor units. No concerns at this time.

Today, we covered the true/false and multiple choice portion of his exam, ensuring to fill in the student's knowledge gaps about the material along with teaching when moments arose. When appropriate, directed student to correct places in his notes to find the answers to specific questions. Following the multiple choice questions, we went over one of his essay prompts for his assignment. We looked at the primary source material and separated out arguments for him to draft an essay. Student left with portion of final to work on at home. No concerns from this session.
