Recent Leeds SAT Subject Tests Tutoring Session Notes
Today was the first session with the student. We discussed her strategy for studying since she has a little less than 3 weeks until the exam (10/5). She has a good background in Biology and we spent this session reviewing important concepts. We also discussed the format of the exam and some useful tips when taking the test. She feels more comfortable taking the SAT Biology (E), given her background, and I agree with this decision. We agreed that she will spend the next few days studying her weakest areas in order to achieve a well-rounded grasp of the content. We will be meeting again on Friday 9/20. Overall, it was a great first session.
The student is taking the SAT Bio test in early November and has been having trouble achieving the scores she wants on practice tests. We began by going over test taking strategies, specifically those relevant to the SAT IIs, such as when to skip a problem and when to put down an answer, even if you aren't sure. She had questions about mitosis vs meiosis, the renal system, blood types, and DNA replication. We went over the questions that she got wrong on her most recent test. For the next session she wants to go over genetic dominance, Hardy-Weinberg equations, and evolution.
We went over a biology SAT prep test that the student had taken and discussed some of the problem areas that the student was having in both biology and chemistry. We had a frank discussion about how seriously the student has been taking studying for this test so far before setting up a schedule for exactly how he's going to use the next two weeks before he has to face the real test. I am now holding him accountable for reporting to me every night with a summary of and questions about the material he's studied.
The student and I did some preliminary work on the SAT Biology. We reviewed some of the basic information about the test. We also reviewed some of the material she has already covered in class. We specifically reviewed the cell cycle and the process of cell division in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, as well as the flow of blood through the heart and lungs; both topics she said she had not understood thoroughly. She seemed to do very well with the material.
The student and I began her preparation for the SAT II Subject test coming up in May. First, we discussed the outline of the test and how she needs to decide if she would like to take the ecological of molecular emphasis of the biology test. We went over some practice questions, and I ended by encouraging her to take a diagnostic test to see how she might score on test day.
We covered a set of practice questions around biochemistry, including carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. We also discussed some test prep strategies for breaking down unfamiliar words and terms. The student is doing really well in applying the strong foundation from what she's covering in class to preparing for the SAT II.
