Bath PCAT Quantitative Ability Tutoring FAQ
If you're preparing to apply to pharmacy school, you will have to take the Pharmacy College Admission Test, or PCAT, and face its six imposing sections. The Quantitative Ability section can prove to be the most difficult for many students ' even those with strong math skills ' due to the breadth and depth of the content it features. After all, not many exams cover elementary-school concepts like fractions and percentages, calculus principles like derivatives and integrals, and a wide variety of material of intervening difficulty. In addition, questions on the PCAT Quantitative Ability section measures concepts at such a level of detail that simply being familiar with a topic or having once studied it is not enough to prepare you for success on the section.
Reviewing for such an exam is best accomplished by focusing your attention on just the skills and concepts that trouble you the most. However, figuring out how to structure your studies accordingly can seem nearly impossible. General study aids simply can't provide you with instruction that is tailor made for you. A knowledgeable instructor, however, can provide students with custom-tailored instruction in order to maximize the efficiency of his or her review. Private PCAT Quantitative Ability tutoring is available all across the country and could make the difference between facing your test day with anxiety and facing it with confidence. At this point, we are trying to touch the general outlines of several kinds of problems. We worked on easy to moderate forms of: percentages, exponents, and the basics of probability. Then, the student worked through the easy problems of the text, as a confidence-boosting exercise (and to give him an idea of what to do for the coming days). I assigned the test prep book's mixed verbal and quantitative sections (22 / 23), easy and moderate problems.
The student and I met for another session of GRE tutoring. In this session we spent most of the time going over percentages problems. We also did some critical reading practice, which he did decent on. His goal is to practice more in order to see greater improvement.
The student is taking his exam on Wednesday, and so we are simply doing a variety of general practice problems. We went through test corrections for the exam he completed. As for the math, I clarified the important differences between permutations and combinations as well as explained probability for mutually exclusive events. We went through how to approach questions about inferences based on the text and those asking to undermine an argument. He feels more confident about the exam.
For our first session we covered mostly the writing portion. Because the test is so far away, I felt we should work on what is mostly a conceptual section (whereas reading and math are more memorization). The student showed a great ability to find holes in the arguments in the "analyze an argument" section. Next time we will practice filling in around these main points.
I assisted the student by doing a practice math section and verbal section. We went over some of the details she was missing from the math section. We reviewed some vocabulary for the verbal section and discussed strategies for reading comprehension.
She took a practice test this weekend. We went over a few of the problems from that, and then focused on slope and area stuff from a few weeks ago. We will continue to meet until the test.
