We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

HSPT Quantitative Tutoring FAQ

The Quantitative Skills section of the High School Placement Test (HSPT) can pose a set of unique challenges, both on test day and during preparation, because its questions combine both logic and mathematical concepts. Lasting for fifty-two minutes, the test consists of thirty questions and asks students to complete sequences, find and predict patterns, and manipulate numbers. With such a specific skill set needed for success on this portion of the HSPT, you may want your child to have some extra help as he or she reviews for the exam.

If your child is having trouble with the material tested in the HSPT Quantitative Skills section or is having difficulty dissecting the unique question presentations and formats, consider calling Varsity Tutors to find out how we can help you connect with a HSPT Quantitative Skills tutor who can provide your student with custom-tailored instruction that might be just the thing to help him or her make sense of the concepts and problem types with which he or she is currently struggling.

The student and I had our final session of tutoring. We spent most of the session going over a level 2 practice test I had assigned for homework. The student did very well, scoring a 680 out of 800. We went over the questions he missed and the ones he skipped, and spent a lot of time focusing on the quickest way to get to the answer. Finally at the end of the session we talked about test taking strategy. I focused on getting into the right mindset before taking the test. At the end of the session we said our goodbyes and I wished him luck on the test.

The student seems a lot more comfortable both with me and with the material this week. We began with reviewing the written sections we had gone over last week and discussing the common grammar errors we saw come up. We started a notes sheet that she can add to as she sees patterns or errors that emerge a lot. We then talked about strategies for essay portion and how to make the most of the 25 minutes you have. We practiced creating an outline for an sample essay and she is going to try one at home this week that we can go over together next week. We finished by discussing the reading section and will discuss that again next week. The student seems very confident in being able to recognize tone and purpose in reading passages and we talked about how she can use that as she completes the reading sections.

Tried to figure out student 1's practice/diagnostic test and results, but eventually put it aside because couldn't be certain which set of matching questions/answers student had actually done. Would also have left student 2 out. Instead, had student 1 and 2 take first 15 questions from section 2 of practice test 1 of the study guide on 15 min timer. Debriefed about section as whole, analyzed student answer/reasoning vs correct answer/reasoning for each question, and discussed a few strategies. Had students start to compile vocab list from words in questions. Talked about some ways to learn vocab over next month. Will focus on resources for student 1 to make own flashcards per his request.

The student is doing very well. Today we looked at her essay, some science questions, and reviewed some grammar. She grasps and implements new concepts quickly. Her essay had great ideas and examples and would have easily scored a 6 if it weren't for the pervasive grammar errors. Her transitions and organizations could use a little polishing as well. We talked about what she could do better next time, and she is going to try using some different strategies on her next practice test. Similarly, on the Science section she easily figured out the correct answer to most of the questions she missed. I really feel that her lower scores on the test so far have been largely due to unfamiliarity with the format.

The student and I met today for a short session due to schedule confusion, but we'll do 2.5 hours next time to even things out. We studied the Math test in detail today, and discovered that while he has a VERY solid math foundation, his speed is where he struggles. Armed with that knowledge, we'll work on speed problems next time.
