Certified Tutor

From an early age I knew that I had an interest in helping others learn. In elementary school I remember being asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" My response "A teacher." Science and math are often challenging subjects for several people. When I meet new people and they ask what I do, their faces often immediately cringe when they learn I have a Ph.D. in Chemistry. Needless to say, science and math are generally not everyone's favorite. My approach to teaching is to first identify what a student already knows. It is important to establish "pre-knowledge" before building upon further concepts. At times this requires correcting misconceptions in order to establish deeper learning. From there we can begin to focus on areas that need to be addressed. My approach is very active and is rooted in problem solving. When I teach I want my students to practice as many problems as possible. My approach in an individual tutoring session would be the same.

My student evaluations suggest that I am a strong teacher who cares about student success. This year I was awarded an "Excellence in Teaching" award from the South Carolina Organization of Independent Colleges and Universities. I think my approach is very student centered, and I am confident my strategies can help you succeed. I look forward to working with you in the future.
