I was volunteered in high school to tutor math on my lunch breaks by my precalculus teacher. The students that I tutored told me that I explained math better than their teachers and it was a great feeling.I pursued my degree in Secondary Mathematics and taught Junior High School math when I was certified. While pursuing my degree in teaching students with learning disabilities, I co-taught the first grade at a Montessori school. Currently I work for a private company that pushes me into title one schools in Harlem to help them with HIgh School Math courses to prep for the common core exams. I also work for publicly funded programs as a third grade teacher.Teaching is the most rewarding profession become my students' success becomes a part of my own success story.

I taught AP & IB Physics for six years in the late 90's, with exceptional success for my students on all AP and IB exams. I've also taught regular physics (as opposed to college prep). And I taught Algebra 1 through Calculus in rural Louisiana through the Teach For America program before I got licensed to teach physics. These and other teaching jobs involved quite a bit of one-on-one work with students.Even though I was known for guiding my students to good results on the AP and IB physics tests, that wasn't what mattered most to me. I wanted to share my excitement and love for math and physics. The most important results for me were seeing students get excited about physics, and start doing their own exploring. Test scores come and go, but attitude and enthusiasm are forever.

I am passionate about helping students achieve their academic goals and pursuits through proven study strategies. I attended Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Chemical Engineering. While in college, I worked with middle school aged students in the Science Bound program with STEM related subjects. I also have worked with high school students at my church with college preparatory classes and ACT prep. While I tutor different subjects, I am most passionate about English, French, and Reading. My philosophy towards learning is never give up. We all can learn something new! It is only a matter of understanding which learning method works best for each individual learner and ascertaining the skill-sets needed. In my experience helping students , I have developed proven study tips and strategies that have helped my students achieve their academic goals. In my free time, I enjoy travel especially to Europe. I hope to one day say I have visited all of the continents except of course Antarctica. I also enjoy playing tennis and spending time with friends and family.

I am eager to help students thrive because I'm still very much a student myself, and will be for the foreseeable future. Though I enjoyed my time as an undergraduate student in Literature, and learned quite a bit during my time at Vanderbilt, there's still more work to be done. I am working towards a Master's degree, and will continue on from there.Though I am more than happy to help where needed anywhere from K-12, I am most experienced with test prep tutoring. The SAT and ACT tests can be an extremely stressful event for students, especially first time test-takers, so I do my best to go beyond the material covered by the tests and prepare students for the experience of taking the test itself, so that when the day comes, they are confident and prepared to tackle whatever challenges rise up before them. The way that I teach generally falls in line with the way that I learn best myself: discussion and collaborative explanation. When approaching difficult material, lecturing at a student leaves much to be desired. I aim to help them arrive at conclusions and realizations on their own by building on material with which they are already comfortable and confident, and working together towards a solution rather than giving the answer and expecting it to simply be memorized.Outside of academic pursuits, I enjoy many creatively-focused hobbies, primarily writing, acting, and even juggling! I am thankful for the opportunity in my time at Vanderbilt to combine all three into an annual show that not only brought smiles to the faces of a campus, but had the chance to reach out into the Nashville community and make a difference.

Frequently Asked Questions
Kindergarten social studies focuses on building foundational skills in self-awareness, community understanding, and basic geography. Students typically learn about:
- Themselves and their families (relationships, routines, emotions)
- Their community and neighborhood (helpers, places, basic jobs)
- Seasons, weather, and simple geography concepts
- Holidays, cultures, and diversity
- Basic civics like following rules and cooperation
These concepts help young learners understand their place in the world and develop social-emotional skills essential for academic success.
While classroom instruction reaches the whole group, personalized 1-on-1 social studies instruction allows tutors to adapt pacing and teaching methods to each child's learning style and interests. A tutor can use hands-on activities, storytelling, and real-world connections that specifically engage your child—whether that's exploring maps through games, discussing their own family traditions, or role-playing community helpers. This personalized approach helps younger learners stay engaged and deepen their understanding of concepts that might move quickly in a classroom setting.
Many kindergarteners struggle with abstract thinking required for geography and time concepts—ideas like "past," "community," and maps can be difficult when students learn primarily through concrete, hands-on experiences. Additionally, some children find it challenging to discuss emotions, understand different perspectives, or sit through group discussions about unfamiliar cultures. With personalized instruction, tutors can use concrete examples, visual aids, and interactive activities that make these abstract ideas tangible, helping students build confidence and comprehension at their own pace.
The best kindergarten social studies tutors combine subject knowledge with understanding of early childhood development. Look for someone who:
- Makes learning playful and engaging through games, storytelling, and hands-on activities
- Knows how to explain social-emotional concepts in age-appropriate ways
- Is patient and builds confidence in young learners
- Communicates clearly with parents about progress
- Adapts lessons based on each child's interests and learning pace
Varsity Tutors connects you with experienced tutors who understand how to teach social studies in ways that capture kindergarteners' natural curiosity about the world around them.
Progress in kindergarten social studies looks different than in math or reading. You'll notice improvements when your child:
- Uses more descriptive language about feelings, family, and community
- Shows curiosity about different cultures, families, or jobs
- Participates more confidently in group activities and discussions
- Better understands routines, rules, and how to cooperate with others
- Can identify basic map concepts or describe their neighborhood
A good tutor will share observations about your child's growing confidence and engagement, along with specific examples of concepts they're mastering.
Yes. Much of kindergarten social studies curriculum focuses on self-awareness, emotions, relationships, and community—all central to social-emotional learning. Personalized instruction provides a safe space for young learners to discuss feelings, practice empathy, and explore different perspectives. Through guided conversations and activities, tutors can help build confidence, develop better communication skills, and strengthen your child's understanding of how they relate to others. This personalized support complements classroom learning and can have meaningful benefits for both academics and social confidence.
For kindergarteners, consistency matters more than intensity. Most families see positive results with one or two 30-45 minute sessions per week, allowing enough time between sessions for concepts to be reinforced at home and in the classroom. The ideal frequency depends on your child's specific needs, learning pace, and your goals. Whether you're looking to address specific gaps, build confidence with social concepts, or provide enrichment, a tutor can recommend a schedule that works best for your family and your child's learning style.
