IB Chemistry HL Tutoring FAQ
Higher-level International Baccalaureate courses are designed for students who possess a drive to discover more intricate relationships and master more intensive material in a given academic discipline than are typically featured in a standard-level course. Given the tremendous volume of pertinent material in the field of chemistry, higher-level IB coursework can become extremely difficult very quickly. If you are having trouble grasping the intensive coursework and concepts in your IB Chemistry HL course, Varsity Tutors can connect you to a certified IB Chemistry tutor in your area.
Topics in IB Chemistry HL span from the relationships between subatomic particles to the mechanisms of basic organic chemistry reactions, and even into the realms of thermochemistry and laboratory analyses. The study of chemistry encompasses both a huge span of material and a tremendous level of depth in each concept. Each chemical process can be defined in numerous terms: the overt observable result, the molecular interactions, the subatomic mechanisms, the reaction energetics, and even the quantitative analytical methods necessary to record these results are all fair game when studying the field. Whatever concepts you are struggling with, your IB Chemistry tutor will identify your problem areas and develop a personalized plan to help you deal with the rigorous course load.
Students enrolled in higher-level coursework can easily find themselves overwhelmed by the plethora of concepts they are expected to know. If you find yourself struggling to stay on top of your chemistry coursework, consider IB Chemistry HL tutoring. Varsity Tutors will connect you to tutors who are familiar with the IB Chemistry HL curriculum and exams. Whether you need help mastering the immediate content being covered in your course, reviewing old content in preparation for your exams, or looking ahead in anticipation of future course concepts, your tutor can build a set of lesson plans tailored to your personal objectives. Varsity Tutors helps you connect with an instructor either in-person or through face-to-face online sessions through our live learning platform. Your particular course requirements, academic strengths and interests, and even your unique learning style and study habits are taken into consideration in order to find the private tutor in your area who best complements your preferences. Your tutor can then evaluate the particular areas in your studies that give you the most trouble and develop targeted practice exercises and strategies to strengthen these areas. Your IB Chemistry HL tutoring sessions can be formatted in the way that works best for you. The one-on-one nature of private instruction allows you to dictate how material is presented and the pace at which you proceed. Whereas a class of students may glaze over concepts that you find confusing, or focus time on reviewing material that you have already mastered, your IB Chemistry HL tutoring sessions can be customized to your unique educational needs.
The students who choose to pursue coursework in higher-level IB Chemistry are often interested in pursuing college studies and careers in chemistry or related fields. Developing the skills presented in IB Chemistry HL is an essential stepping stone toward proficiency in college-level and even graduate-level coursework. Don't risk your chemistry foundation by falling behind during your current studies. Instead, take steps to best prepare yourself for the future academic rigors of an education in chemistry principles. A professional IB Chemistry tutor will ensure that you have the skills to succeed in your higher-level IB Chemistry courses and will give you the best possible chance to secure a bright future in the field of chemistry. Recent IB Chemistry HL Tutoring Session Notes
We covered chemical equilibrium. I used a number of real-world examples to demonstrate Le Chatelier's principle and how reversible reactions will reach equilibrium no matter which side of the equation you start with. By the end of the section, the student was able to answer all of the section questions for the chemical equilibrium portion.
We balanced several redox reactions. We discussed the introductory principles of voltaic cells (although we solved no voltaic cell problems). We solved two difficult projectile motion problems. The student is very gifted in memorization and in quick reasoning and many classes she has taken have rewarded those skills. Her goal is to become comfortable with expecting physics and chemistry to require multi-step reasoning, in which you typically do not know the answer to a practice problem without several minutes of work.
We spent the majority of the time discussing the previous Molecular Biology laboratory exercise in preparation for the lab quiz, the written lab report, and the upcoming exam. The exercise entailed the generation of a plasmid, inserting the plasmid into bacterial cells, and then cutting the plasmid with a restriction enzyme. The student was provided with an image of a gel run through electrophoresis and I provided assistance in interpreting the bands for both the uncut and cut plasmid. We also reviewed the experimental protocol in order to ensure she had complete understanding of the method. We finally made sure that all of the questions on the report were answered accurately.
During this session, the student and I continued to work on her science project covering the human body systems. Since the last time we met, she completed the flyer about the respiratory system. Tonight we worked specifically on the brochure which was to include information about the most common diseases of the body system (she picked respiratory system) and how to prevent them. At the end of our research, she still needed to complete some of the information about the diseases and the prevention section. The next meeting we plan to complete the final part of the project, which is a flip book of all the body systems.
We covered the muscle system and reviewed materials from before like epithelial and connective tissue. Furthermore we did different types of membranes and cavities in human anatomy. We dove in and browsed different systems in the body as well as what they are composed of. We studied the nervous system in depth, talked about microglia of different kinds and what their functions are specifically. I asked him to review what we did that day since lots was covered and to review the materials we did in the past so it will remain with him. No concerns as I see he is making progress and scores of his latest quizzes show improvement.
During our session, the student and I worked on lesson three section two, which covered human population growth. We completed the section assessment, wrote a one page story, and completed most of the main assignment questions.
