Hi! My name is Adelle Flores, and I'm an experienced tutor and teacher who is ready to help you (or your child) succeed.I graduated in the top 5% of my high school class at Katy High School and went on to attend the University of Houston (GO COOGS!). I graduated from UH in May of 2018 with a degree in Biology and minor in Medicine and Society. I participated in the Honors College while at UH as well.I currently attend the University of Houston - Victoria in Katy, Texas and am working on my Master of Business Administration.Overall, my academic courseworks highlights include the following: Calculus 1 & 2, Statistics for the Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Great Books (Literature), History of Medicine, and business topics such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Economics. My teaching pedagogy involves working with each individual student to develop a plan for their success: every student is starting at a different point, and I make an effort to meet them where they are and walk with them through their learning journey instead of pulling them up to where they "should" be right away. I switch between learning styles in order to make sure that students understand the material in the way that makes sense to them. Individualization is at the core of tutoring and why students seek it, so lessons should be given in the same way.I'm very communicative and connected in to my students and their needs. I'm also willing to drive throughout the Houston area if you are interested in In-Person Tutoring.Let's get started!

I love teaching because I love seeing my students engaged with learning. I love to see the "aha" moments when they make connections and are proud of their accomplishments. I am a lifelong learner. I have a BA in Religion (Buddhism) from Carleton College and a MA in Languages and Cultures of Asia from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have traveled to France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, and China. I've lived in a suburb of Paris, a small farming island of Japan, and also in Lhasa in the Tibetan region for one summer. I taught communications/writing and comparative religion at UW-Madison. Recently, I taught pre-K at a Reggio Emilia inspired school, where learning is child directed. Currently, I wake up very early to teach English as a foreign language to students in China. I love to see the strengths and potential in all people. I believe educators have the responsibility to support equity in education and I consider myself an ally to BIPOC, AAPI, Latinx, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, and other groups. I graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 2014, majoring in Politics with minors in French and Theater. Over the last two years, I've worked in the media and entertainment world and will be applying to law school later this year to matriculate in the fall of 2017.I'd be a great tutor particularly because of the success I've observed in tutoring my younger cousin (rising HS sophomore). I also tutored classmates throughout my high school career in a variety of subjects. In my opinion, the most important attribute in a tutor is flexibility: being able to tailor goals and strategies to a particular student's needs and optimal learning styles. My strengths are in methodically breaking down concepts in a variety of subjects and making them accessible, especially with visual aids and diagrams. I also have an ability to motivate students to think for themselves by asking stimulating questions ("Okay, we know Mt. Everest is closer to the equator than Rome, yet it's still colder than Rome. But what else is different about the two that could explain why that's the case?"). Finally, I've found that the best way to facilitate learning is to highlight easily understandable parallels to the content being studied. For example, I would compare a historical event to an ongoing, contemporary controversy. Or I would encourage students to think of historical figures as actual characters with goals and motivations instead of just a name on a page. Likewise, when tutoring vocabulary, I would encourage students to make an educated guess about a word's meaning by thinking of other words with similar roots.Through it all, students need to feel that their tutor is someone dependable, trustworthy, and fun to be around. This is an attitude I'd bring with me to any session.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students often find it difficult to keep track of the complex relationships between gods, goddesses, heroes, and mythological creatures—especially when different sources tell slightly different versions of the same myths. Another common challenge is understanding the cultural and historical context behind these stories and how they reflected ancient Greek values, religion, and society. Additionally, many students struggle with analyzing the deeper symbolism and themes in mythology, such as fate versus free will, hubris and its consequences, and the role of the gods in human affairs. A tutor can help you organize these interconnected narratives and develop strategies for remembering key details while building deeper comprehension of why these stories mattered to ancient Greeks.
Personalized tutoring allows a tutor to identify your specific writing strengths and weaknesses, whether that's thesis development, textual evidence selection, or organizing complex mythological narratives into coherent arguments. A tutor can work with you to develop a framework for analyzing myths—helping you move beyond plot summary to explore themes, character motivation, and cultural significance. They can also provide feedback on multiple drafts of your essays, teaching you revision strategies specific to mythology analysis. This targeted approach is far more effective than generic writing advice, as your tutor adapts their instruction to your learning style and the particular assignments your teacher is giving.
An excellent mythology tutor should have strong knowledge of the major myths, gods, and heroes, but more importantly, they should be able to explain why these stories matter and how to analyze them critically. Look for someone who can connect mythology to broader themes in literature, history, and culture—not just recite facts. The best tutors are skilled at breaking down complex narratives into understandable components, helping you see patterns across different myths, and teaching you how to construct arguments about symbolism and meaning. They should also be patient with the memorization challenges that come with mythology and able to suggest effective memory techniques tailored to how you learn best.
Many students begin to see noticeable improvements in their comprehension and grades within 3-4 weeks of consistent, personalized tutoring—particularly if they're struggling with organizing mythological information or developing analysis skills. However, the timeline depends on your starting point, how frequently you meet with your tutor, and how actively you engage between sessions. If you're preparing for a major test or essay assignment, a focused study plan over 4-6 weeks can make a significant difference. The key is consistency: regular sessions combined with practice and review between meetings tend to produce faster results than sporadic tutoring.
The answer depends on your specific needs and what your class emphasizes. If you're struggling to remember which god does what or keep characters straight, content knowledge should be your priority—your tutor can help you create effective study systems and memory strategies. However, most mythology classes require both: you need to know the stories well enough to reference them accurately, but you also need to analyze what they mean. A good approach is to start by building solid foundational knowledge in your first few tutoring sessions, then shift toward developing stronger analysis and essay-writing skills. Your tutor can assess where you stand and recommend the best balance for your particular class and learning goals.
Absolutely. A tutor can help you develop a study schedule leading up to your exam, identify which topics and myths are most important to focus on, and create practice questions that mirror the format your teacher uses. They can also teach you test-taking strategies specific to mythology—such as how to approach essay questions about themes, how to structure short-answer responses about specific myths, and how to manage your time if you're facing multiple questions. Working through practice materials with your tutor lets you get feedback on your answers and understanding before the actual exam, building confidence and helping you identify any remaining weak spots.
Greek mythology appears across many subjects: in literature classes (where mythological references and archetypes appear in modern texts), history classes (understanding ancient Greek civilization), Latin or classical languages, and even art history. A tutor can help you make these connections, showing you how the same myths or gods appear in different contexts and subjects. This deeper, cross-subject understanding not only helps you do better in your mythology class but also enriches your learning in related courses. If you're studying multiple subjects that touch on mythology, let your tutor know—they can help you build a more integrated understanding rather than treating mythology as isolated material.
