Leeds Ethics Tutoring FAQ
Ethics coursework is important for you if you are a law student. Not only is it a required class, but you will need to take the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam, or MPRE, which includes a number of ethics relevant questions. The MPRE is required by almost all states before a candidate can be licensed to practice law. Connecticut and New Jersey, however, will waive the requirement for candidates that receive a C or higher in an ethics class, so doing well in ethics is an even more important part of law school. Though it seems like a simple course, there are numerous concepts that you may have trouble grasping or need to brush up on. You need to be aware of the structural aspects of professional responsibility, various codes of conduct, how to make unbiased decisions, and how ethics can be applied to law in general. Further, you will need to be able to read comprehensively and understand the jargon used in complex court documents when determining if an individual acted within ethical boundaries, such as in an employer-employee lawsuit.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with ethics tutoring in your area and online. You can create a student profile that allows you to find tutors who can teach to your learning style. In addition, your personal tutor will craft an individualized lesson plan that focuses on your weaknesses and avoids rehashing the ethics concepts you have mastered.
Ethics tutoring can help students gain the advantage needed to not only do well on their class final, but also on the MPRE. Ethics teaches you more than just the obvious rules of the profession, it teaches you about the rules that well-meaning attorneys struggle with daily. Through personal tutoring, you can develop a strong understanding of law and ethics. Duties to current and former clients and duties of confidentiality are sometimes difficult to understand. For example, an attorney cannot take on a new client if that new client's case would adversely affect a former client. However, the former client can sign a waiver releasing the attorney. While it may sound complicated, these are not rules without reason. These are designed to protect all who are involved in a situation. Ethics tutoring can help students understand the rules that govern how judges conduct themselves. These rules, while not always covered in ethics classes, will be tested on the MPRE. Judges must ensure that they are free of conflicts of interest and must immediately recuse, or disqualify, themselves when one becomes known. These rules affect law clerks, attorneys, and judges, as well as anyone else in the law field. Conflict of interest rules can be even more complex when they affect multiple representations. When can an attorney represent more than one party and what are the rules that govern that representation? It is important to know that an attorney cannot keep secrets from one party. Anything that he or she learns from any one of the clients must be shared with all of them. Most rules that are covered by ethics classes are from the Model Rules of Professional Conduct, which was published by the American Bar Association. These are the rules that the MPRE tests and these are the rules on which most law schools spend their time.
Ethics tutoring can help students create outlines and study guides to better prepare for both law school ethics classes and the MPRE. Varsity Tutors can help connect you with a tutor who is law student or a lawyer who has taken and passed ethics courses, as well as the MPRE, and understand the rules and strategies to prepare for these challenges. Recent Leeds Ethics Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I worked on the homework for Section 3.1 and 3.2 from her text. This covered Newton's Method (which determines the roots of a function), and L'Hospital's rule for limits. She and I will follow up after break to get her ready for her final. I am quite excited about her fantastic grade of 104%!
The student and I went over a handful of worksheets encompassing basic algebra rules (exponents, radicals, PEMDAS, etc.) Her confidence is improving, and she appears to understand the material once I teach it to her.
This was our last session together before the student takes his MCAT exam this Thursday. We focused on the last element of the exam, the essay. He showed significant progress and the ability to write a well-developed essay within the time allotted.
Review of the grammar basics before introduction to the writing section of the test. Error identification questions and the most common errors. Continued practice of reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Worked on ACT Math. Went well. Much of what we will do for math section will be refreshing on easier concepts that he has not worked with in 2-4 years.
We finished the second math section of the practice test and were able to calculate the student's score. She's gone up by 100 points! We talked about strategies for the writing portion of the test. We also talked about what a 5 paragraph essay is and how to outline and come up with your writing points before you actually begin writing. We then talked about word roots and how to use them to figure out the meaning of a word you don't know.
