Edinburgh 11th Grade Writing Tutoring FAQ
Eleventh-grade English courses are often the most writing intensive classes offered in high school curricula, and with good reason. For students interested in pursuing a college education, junior year marks the final opportunity to add high marks to an impressive transcript, hone creative writing skills for college admissions essays, and prepare for SAT or ACT essays. Even for those planning to pursue other interests after high school, the composition-heavy workload of eleventh grade English coincides with the academic rigors of advanced math, science, history, and elective coursework, leading to a stressful and draining academic year.
Whether you are enrolled in standard, honors, or AP level English, an experienced eleventh-grade writing tutor may be able to help shape your skills. Compositional aptitude is one of only a few academic pursuits that are almost universally applicable to careers in research, teaching, management, development, sales, and even labor require the fundamentals of clear writing skills. While the focus on composition inherent in eleventh-grade English courses may be off-putting, it is also a stellar opportunity to refresh or improve this critical skill. Taking advantage of eleventh-grade writing tutoring allows students to receive targeted feedback on their compositions.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a tutor who can identify patterns in your writing, ranging from small-scale grammar inconsistencies to widespread recurring problems with selecting compelling evidence. The one-on-one attention of private tutoring allows an instructor to develop strategies and techniques specific to each student's writing habits. Tutors can provide feedback specific to admissions essays, literary analysis, the SAT or ACT, the AP English and Composition exams, or even help you develop strong cover letter and resume writing skills. The customized nature of private tutoring means that your instructor can assist you both with class assignments and with the practical applications of writing skills outside the classroom.
Your tutor will get to know you on a personal level. Once they learn more about you, they will create a custom lesson plan that is tailored to your needs. This is just one of the many benefits of hiring a private tutor. Another advantage is the immediate confidence boost you will feel when you begin grasping the concepts you once though impossible to learn. You won't have to wait in line after class anymore to get your questions answered, only to be rushed in the two minutes before you have to rush off to your next class. You will have multiple methods of communicating with your tutor, so you can get all of your questions answered right away. A tutor will teach you valuable study skills that you can take to college with you. Also, your tutor will help you set future academic goals and teach you how you can achieve them.
Eleventh-graders are often beginning the transition into adulthood, and emphasizing the value of effective written communication can help carry them forward in their future endeavors. We can help connect you with eleventh-grade writing tutors across the country, making lessons readily available. Your tutor will work around your schedule to prioritize your convenience. Tutoring sessions can take place at the time and location that you choose whether you prefer an in-person weekend lesson at the local library or an evening session in your living room. Your sessions can even take place through an interactive face-to-face online platform. Tutors are flexible, and can work to accommodate your schedule. If you are interested in more information about connecting with a writing tutor in your area, contact your local educational director today! You are already considering using a private English tutor, why not take some of the pressure off of yourself and let Varsity Tutors help you.

After the ACT, the student asked me to help him work on his writing skills. We worked on argumentation using evidence, practicing with the simple source of a fable by Aesop. Then we complicated the argument by incorporating a second source, a book about the meaning of animals in Shakespeare's time. I challenged him to create a short paper arguing for how Shakespeare might have understood the meaning of Aesop's fable and he created an argument that accommodated the prompt.
The student and I reviewed an essay she had written for one of her classes. Due to the grade on this essay, she was allocated a certain amount of time to edit and re-submit her essay. I worked with her on editing the first half of her essay. I left her with instructions to continue editing her essay based on the outline we developed.
This was my first session with the student. He was a really sweet boy who seemed anxious to please. His notes on his summer reading were lucid and pinpointed major points. I reviewed the summer reading requirements and had questions about the project specific to the unique layout of the book. In order to check his writing skills, I gave him a prompt. He wrote the introduction and it was insightful.
The student and I covered an assignment for her college writing course. We went over the planning stages of the essay, and began constructing the body paragraphs. She was a great student, very cooperative and a pleasure to work with!
Had a good getting to know each other conversation, went over a previous paper she had written, identified areas of opportunity in her writing process and came up with a writing topic to work on a new paper over the next several sessions.
Continued working on summer work for new school year. Formatting thesis statements and finishing answering reading comprehension questions. assigned homework: print out notes and thesis statements. Also rough draft of Gatsby.
