I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a finance and accounting professional at a Fortune 100 firm with an MBA and currently pursuing the CMA.

My teaching method would absolutely vary depending on the student. Visual learners need different kind of help than non-visual. For visual learners, I would try to paint a picture of the problem or formula so it is easier for them to understand. For non-visual, I can stick more with formulas, numbers, and memorization.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To get the student not to simply memorize how to get or find an answer, but to help them reach a level of confidence and preparation that makes the material seem second nature to them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce ourselves off the clock and get a bit of background for each of us. Then, we begin easing into the subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Encourage them to think outside the box. Help them find ways to make connections in subjects that can be difficult to do so. It may take time, but constant positive reinforcement and guidance can accomplish this.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Have them set small, medium, and long term goals

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

It depends on the student and how they learn. I would try visual and nonvisual tactics. Don't push, but help them be even more relaxed, because they are already frustrated.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Take our time. Piece by piece until they have a good grasp of everything.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Taking time to get to know the student and how they learn.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Help make the subject more visual.
