As a tutor, I believe that students benefit from a variety of approaches, depending on their backgrounds, current situations and feelings about writing. I believe the most important part of tutoring is empowering the student to feel that he/she is capable of writing and reading well and correcting his/her own errors. I work hard on overcoming the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that many students experience when faced with writing.I started teaching writing in 1987. Most recently, since 2005, I have taught beginning and advanced comp at Passaic County Community College, advised and tutored students in danger of failing college at Marymount, run the writing component of the CAP program at Pace University (a program which allows students who would not normally be accepted to have a year's probation, when their work needs to be brought up to college level), and taught freshman comp and advanced research classes at York-CUNY. I also piloted and designed a class for below college level writers at Rutgers University Graduate School of Social Work. In private tutoring through Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, I have worked with high school students with issues including ESL, Developmental Delays and emotional barriers.Besides freshman comp, I have also taught advanced research and writing skills classes for all majors, and helped students prepare multi-media and new media presentations. I have worked with populations ranging from pre-GED to graduate level and am extremely flexible in my teaching approach. I have a BA, MA and PhD in English.

I am a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Class of 2014. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Physiology from Case Western Reserve University. I am passionate about learning and I want students to have that same passion so they can reach their true potential and not let academics stand in the way of a bright future. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but my strengths include standardized tests and writing, which can make a huge impact upon a student's educational goals. I am very personable and I want students to feel comfortable enough with me to ask me anything. My hobbies include reading, soccer, and pretty much anything outdoors.

I am a rising senior at Georgia State University studying poetry and religions. I have an extensive background in writing that includes long essays and creative pieces. I also grew up speaking some Spanish at home, as well as taking over ten years of Spanish classes in school. I hope to become totally fluent someday, so I sharpen my skills with DuoLingo daily.Writing is my true passion, and my goal is to help empower others to be able to use this skill. I firmly believe that every person can develop a writing style that works for them, and I hope to help clients gain the knowledge and confidence they need to communicate their ideas effectively whether they are working on a research paper or a piece of fiction. A lot of people I know have admitted, at some point, to being flat-out scared of writing. Good communication through writing is a nuanced skill, but with patience and practice it can become second-nature to anyone!I'm currently the Poetry Editor at Underground, GSU's undergraduate art and literary journal. I have lived in the Chamblee-Tucker area my whole life, and my hobbies include writing poems, reading, drawing, playing bass, and playing rec roller derby. My favorite author is James Baldwin.

One of the most rewarding accomplishments is helping learners realize their full potential in life; especially when a student struggles academically, it’s a real victory to witness that moment when a student realizes positive self-growth. I have been rewarded with many of these occasions throughout my tenure as a secondary English classroom teacher. I have especially enjoyed teaching ACT preparation classes because students would often return after the semester and share their exciting news about meeting their score goals.Since I earned my Master’s in Education from Lesley University, I have developed a whole repertoire of strategies for delivering differentiated instruction that meets the individual needs of my students. A student-centered approach is imperative when working one-on-one with individuals. English, literature, and writing are the three areas that I have the most experience and fun teaching. When I am not in the classroom or tutoring, I am hiking in the bluffs of Wisconsin or chasing after my young son. I also enjoy reading historical fiction novels and traveling to historical sites.

I love the look of satisfaction that spreads across a student's face when they master a new skill. Teaching is a creative challenge in which the most important part is to inspire a love of learning. I always make my lesson plans personal, with the needs and interests of the individual in mind. My areas of expertise are in French, Russian, Reading, College Essay Writing, History and Literature.I started learning French when I was seven years old, and continued it through high school. I have done a six-month intensive French exchange in Switzerland, where no English was spoken. I have also volunteered in France on several organic farms. I love to travel and learn new languages and cultures so I tackled Russian in college. I spent a month in Siberia and a semester in St. Petersburg. My degree is in Art History, and so I also have extensive experience in writing papers. I remember the challenges of writing college essays, book reports, and term papers, and feel confident I can help any student in this area.

Hey there! My name is Sam. I grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey, but Philadelphia is now my home, and I could not be happier about that. I am very passionate about education, both in and outside the classroom. From my sophomore year of high school, I knew I wanted to be an educator. As a recent graduate of the Temple University College of Education with a double major in Secondary Social Studies Education and History, I now have the requisite training to fulfill this longstanding dream of mine. No matter the subject, I am a dedicated facilitator of learning who will work my hardest to help students achieve their learning goals. My long term goal in education is to earn a doctorate degree and teach teachers. My philosophy of education is centered around facilitation. I believe my role as an educator is to be a resource for students as they work towards their learning goals. With my training as an educator, my responsibility as a tutor is to identify where students might be struggling and find creative solutions based on empirically proven methods. By the end of each session, my goal is for students to feel as though their perspective is empowered, while being closer to achieving learning goals than we began. On the personal side, I love to explore Philadelphia, especially the food scene, as well as listen to music, watch and play sports, and read non-fiction. I love supporting my alma mater, as a I am a football and basketball season ticket holder, and I serve on two alumni boards. While I enjoy learning about history of all sorts, my favorite subject is pre-Civil War politics. My biggest influence in education is Russell Conwell, the founder of Temple University. In his famous Acres of Diamonds speech, he said that "I do not request a larger garden, but finer seeds." It is this dedication to the foundations of teaching and learning that I bring most to the table as an educator.

I recently graduated magna cum laude from Boston College with highest honors in Political Science. Before I embarked on my collegiate journey, I graduated from Mamaroneck High School at the top of my class and as an AP Scholar with Distinction. During my time at Boston College, I was enrolled in two prestigious programs the Arts and Sciences Honors Program and the Political Science Honors Program. Through this rigorous, comprehensive education, I have attained a wide-breadth of knowledge on a myriad of subjects. In addition to being well-versed in politics and history, I also have a strong background in literature and writing. With a firm command of the English language and a nuanced understanding of grammar, I am well-equipped to help students improve their reading comprehension and essay writing skills. As an avid reader and writing enthusiast, I naturally find great joy in reviewing and editing the work of others. Although writing is incredibly stylistic, it is also remarkably formulaic. With proper preparation, all students are capable of fine-tuning their craft with effective methodologies and strategies all that is needed is the right guidance and support. There are few things more rewarding and fulfilling than helping clients to develop a recipe for success. It truly brings me delight to see a student discovering the right answers to the same questions that once boggled him or her. When students discover that they are more than capable of finding solutions to challenging problems, they often begin to attain a sense of fulfillment from their work. With the right training, any student is capable of excelling academically. My role as the facilitator is to simply show the tricks and techniques that will help a student to achieve noticeable improvements. With my help, I am more than confident that you will be able to succeed and thrive.

I am a student of Amherst College. I'm in process to get my Bachelor of Arts in Film & Media Studies. I've been teaching since my main teacher at art school told me, "I have too many students and too little time. You know all I've taught you: would you be willing to step in as my Teacher's Assistant?" Since then, I've been connecting with students from 5 years old to 50 on the artistic and creative process. This love of teaching led me to become a tour guide at my college and at the campus art museum - the lucky thing is that at both positions I have the chance to both teach about what I love but also persuade my listeners to love it too: nothing's better than a potential college applicant saying, "I'll definitely apply!" or an elementary school kiddo asking, "So wait, museums are cool?" I am a true believer in education in all facets of life to be made available to all people: I know it's enriched my life, and I sure hope I can use my skills to enrich others'. I know there is nothing more satisfying than a job well done; I know my students will achieve the same satisfaction during our tutoring sessions! When I'm not doing all that, I enjoy hiking, cultural excursions, and social dance -- nothing like a swing beat to relax!

As a passionate and dedicated educator, I am thrilled to be a part of the Varsity Tutors team. I am certified to teach English grades 7-12 in CT, I have my master's degree in English Literature, and my bachelor's degree in English with a concentration in secondary education. I have tutored and taught in college, high school, and middle school environments. Most recently, I held high school teaching positions teaching 9th and 11th grade English. In my freshman classes, we focused on composition, and finding a voice in writing. We worked with different mentor texts to refine our writing skills, as well as read an array of literature including classics like The Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet, and more modern texts including the graphic novel, A Monster Calls. I also have teaching experience at the middle school level, teaching 7th and 8th grade Language Arts. From this position, I have experience in SBAC exam preparation. I also am a scorer for the PARCC and SAT exams, making me an expert in their layout and content. When I teach and tutor, I foster an environment that is rigorous, well-supported, and comfortable. I look forward to adding to my love of teaching English by tutoring students as well!
