Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Chesapeake, VA Microbiology tutoring
We covered Newton's 1st and 3rd law conceptual problems, then we worked a problem set in 1-dimensional dynamics. The student is getting very skilled at applying the 6-step method. My goal is to have her work her homework problems with the same careful attention to detail but at a greater speed. We agreed to meet again on Wednesday at 4:30.

The student and I set up a plan for the week that involves completing his required English vignettes, studying for his history exam a little bit each night, and most importantly, completing his science lab. His organization has already improved, and he is using the charts I made him to track each class' assignments. He and I began reworking much of his lab. Although we were not able to finish the bibliography or introduction, we both left with a much deeper understanding of the material and he is well on his way to doing well on this lab. He and I plan to reconnect this week to work on other courses. I am looking forward to tracking our progress across those courses as well! Overall, it was a productive session!

Today we covered equations for motion. We wrote down all the variables we knew and the variable we were solving for. Then we used that information to find an equation and substituted numbers for those variables. We used equations such as (vf+vi)/2*t=d and 2ad=v^2f-v^2i. We learned that in physics, position and velocity are relative. We used direction to account for sign convention of the variables. The student had difficulty with problems that require more than one equation. We will continue working on these equations. She was eager to learn the material.

Today we discussed phasors, complex number math, real/reactive power, dB math, and cell phone antenna operating frequency. After receiving solutions to a previous homework assignment, the student and I went through a few problems and clarified a few confusing points. She is diligent when it comes to uploading her notes, homeworks, and other assignments to a shared Dropbox folder, and shows desire to do well on her upcoming midterm.

The student and I started our session today by talking about curvature and how the formula is constructed. We then shifted gears into talking about analyzing forces in physics, and talking about how tension works.

Today the student and I met to continue our discussion of vectors and kinematic motion in one and two dimensions. We looked at vectors and their components, and vector addition, both the head-to-tail method of graphical addition and addition by components. We looked at some example kinematic problems, solving for distance, time, and velocity under constant acceleration, as well as projectile motion with an initial velocity that is neither purely horizontal or purely vertical. The student is quick with the math, and understands concepts easily once he sees how the problem is set up. We also talked about logarithms and trigonometric identities.
