Today, we talked about balancing equations for redox reactions--I would suggest getting an idea of what tends to be oxidizing vs reducing in chemical reactions (i.e. orgo), to help you figure out which part of the equation is going to be reacting in what ways (for instance, Cr and Mn and ClO- tend to be oxidizing reagents, so it's more likely that the other compound will get oxidized).

The student understood a lot of the material, but he had some problems with redox reactions and unit conversions (dimensional analysis). We first worked on unit conversions, and I showed him how to set them up and told him my tricks for remembering whether you were dividing by a number or multiplying by it- after a couple of practice problems he was able to do them with ease. For the redox reactions, we went over what it meant for something to be oxidized or reduced, and then during the problems, I asked him which process was happening and asked him to identify the oxidation number of each thing before continuing. After practicing with trivial and nontrivial reactions, he said that he understood much better how to do them. I reminded him to balance his half-reactions before I left. He definitely seemed more relaxed at the end of the session.

We went through chapter 7. It concerned chemical reaction and the products of different kinds of reaction. I explained them to the student and went through several examples. Then we went through the questions at the end of the chapter. I asked him to solve several of them to make sure he understood them. He is doing very well.
