I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I have had a lot of experience working with students between volunteering as a teaching assistant in an anatomy lab to working in my university's writing center. The University of Central Florida, UCF, has provided me with ample opportunities to learn how to best teach and tutor. Currently, I am a student at UCF majoring in Writing and Rhetoric with minors in Psychology and Creative Writing, giving me the most comfort with tutoring writing. However, I am well-rounded in a variety of subjects and feel just as confident with many subjects in math and science.
My teaching philosophy is simple: we want to help students understand, not memorize. I know a lot of students are quick to drop knowledge the moment the test or exam has passed, but this is far from an effective approach. Not only does this mean they have to practically start from scratch in each new school year, but it also means that they never truly learned in the first place. I hope that I can help students understand the fundamentals of what they're learning so that knowledge becomes second nature rather than rote memorization.
Now, I know this may sound corny, but my interests outside of academia don't stray far from my interests within academia. I love reading, writing, and analyzing media more than anything else in the world. If I'm not reading a scholarly article or writing an essay for class, I'm reading a story I found intriguing or I'm writing my own.
