My Journey of Learning and Teaching: From Corporate Engineering to Elementary Education Teacher/Tutor
I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Systems from Utah State University and an MBA from The University of Phoenix-Provo Utah campus. For over 15 years, I worked in the corporate computer engineering field as a Novell Master Network Engineer (MCNE) and Master Network Instructor (MCNI), navigating the complexities and innovations of this dynamic industry. Despite my dedication and expertise, I experienced the challenge of being laid off twice in the span of 16 months. This period of uncertainty led me to a new path that would profoundly shape my professional journey.
Following these layoffs, I transitioned to become faculty as an online professor at the University level, where I found my true passion. I began working as a Business and Information Systems and Business Professor for The University of Phoenix Online program and DeVry University Online. This role allowed me to refine my teaching skills, enhance my computer expertise, and develop effective online communication strategies. After ten years in this role, I made the best decision of my career I began substitute teaching at an elementary school.
From the moment I stepped into the classroom, I was captivated by the joy and fulfillment that came from teaching young minds. The first day was transformative; I knew then that I wanted to become an Elementary teacher. I committed myself to this new goal, teaching during the day and taking Elementary Education Pedagogy courses from various universities in person and online at night. Through perseverance and dedication, I successfully completed all the necessary courses and tests, earning a current Utah Teaching License for grades 1-8 with an ESL endorsement.
The last three years, during the Covid-19 pandemic, presented unique challenges and opportunities. Due to health issues, I was privileged to teach 3rd grade completely online through our local school district. This experience further honed my ability to adapt to changing environments and utilize technology effectively in education.
With over 25 years of experience teaching and tutoring both adults and elementary-aged students, I recently retired from full-time teaching in May 2023. I am now excited to join Varsity Tutors, where I aim to continue my passion for learning and teaching. I believe that education is a lifelong journey and that we should strive to learn new skills and lessons every day. My philosophy is that if we aren't learning and moving forward, then we are moving backwards.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, solving puzzles, cooking, watching true crime and mystery shows (I think this comes from solving problems), playing online games, and being with family.
