The student and I wrapped up his summer tutoring on Friday by rewriting his most recent five paragraph essay. This time he argued for the opposite position, and incorporated two outside sources. He gets a bit stuck on vocabulary when trying to express his thoughts, and occasionally needs help jotting down quick ideas that he can return to with an editor's eye. His ideas are actually very clear and logical. I think that if he practices writing quickly, and subsequently revising, the process of writing will become easier for him to complete. We wrapped up with some poetry review. He read Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et decorum est," and I asked him to consider how form complements subject.

The student studied the three pronunciations of "oo," practiced this week's new spelling list, and read a play about a family trip to San Francisco. He did well on the worksheets, reading the story, and writing sentences. We are still working on improving reading comprehension and answering questions based on stories. I have picked up some books that he should be interested in to help boost his interest in reading.

The student had work to do for spelling, math, and science. He had to alphabetize a list of words, including several with the same first letter, which was challenging, but he did a very good job. He also had to measure some objects using cubes and to describe what makes for accurate and inaccurate measurements. In science, he is studying light and how light travels. He answered questions about shadows and clear things.

We reviewed the vocabulary flashcards the student had been practicing. She was able to read every card except one without hesitation. I introduced new flashcards to her, and noted that she is now able to easily read most new one-syllable words. We identified new flashcards for her to work on. We did some reading decoding and comprehension practice. We also worked with multiplication facts - she remembers how to identify fact families from one multiplication fact. She was able to write the 6's multiplication facts with minimal help from me. She has made very good progress, especially in reading, since our tutoring began.

We began by doing a previous word ladder that the student had struggled with. Then, we went over the oa/ow digraph and filled in sentences using words from the word bank. We worked on digraphs again (ch, th, ph, wh, sh). In her reading workbook, she made predictions based on the title and picture; throughout the reading, she answered comprehension questions and did well with decoding new words. Then, we worked on ending digraphs and finished with a read aloud ("Amanda Pig").
