Certified Tutor
I'm an avid tutor with over eight years of experience teaching a plethora of subjects with kids as young as three and some much older than me. A great deal of my skill as a tutor has been gained from learning what seemed to be impossibly difficult subjects throughout my life. When I was eighteen, right after I graduated from High School, I moved to Hong Kong and spent two years there working and studying. I obtained my bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences & Disorders at Brigham Young University, and am completing my master's degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
I've worked as a teacher, research assistant, customer-service representative (speaking Chinese), and of course, tutoring. Much of my academic background centers on the development of behaviors, and how to change them. As a tutor, I work to enhance knowledge of the subject material, and also target executive functioning skills that will further support learning in the application of the material. My time as a pediatric therapist has taught me that learning can be fun, and that's part of my job. I'm highly adept at helping students with ADHD and learning disorders and have an understanding of how to integrate tutoring objectives with IEP goals and the work going on with the school special education staff and general curriculum requirements.
The standardized assessments that I administer as a therapist have also provided me with insight into how standardized exams such as the SAT, ISEE, and GRE are designed, and how the test attempts to differentiate student achievement.
If you need help with a psychology essay, I'll help you write the essay, but I'll also help you learn to think like a psychologist. When you need help with algebra, you'll learn about algebra, but you'll also appreciate how mental flexibility can help you find easier ways to solve difficult problems.
If you have a programming assignment, I can help you finish it. But I'll also make sure you understand how the program functions, and that you leave with a deeper understanding of how to turn your ideas into clean code. When you want to learn Chinese, I can tell you exactly where to place your tongue and lips, rather than just telling you to repeat after me. I'm looking forward to working with you and helping you become a better learner.
I know the system is flawed, but I'm an advocate for you, and will do everything I can to help you succeed.
