I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Benjamin

Certified Tutor

I have wanted to be a teacher as long as I can remember. To this end, I have studied extensively in all my areas of interest, observed experienced professionals in a variety of contexts, and learned from my own experiences. I hold 2 degrees and will shortly receive a third: a BA in Music from Univ. of MD, a BA in History from Stony Brook Univ., and will receive my Masters of Arts in Teaching Social Studies from SBU in December.
In my time at school, I have taken upper level and graduate coursework in US, European, African, and South Asian History, as well as Historiography. These courses, as well as my study of the NY State curricula in Global and American History have made me more than familiar and comfortable with these courses and exams. My own experience as a reader and writer, as well as my extensive study of the SAT, have led to my success in tutoring students for this exam.
My study of teaching techniques and pedagogy, as well as my extensive observation of a diverse group of experienced professionals, has given me an array of tools and techniques to use with students. My own experience giving extra help to high school history students has also taught me a lot. Personally, I believe that a teacher should be the "guide on the side" rather than the "sage on a stage." A teacher should let students do the majority of the talking. I like to use questioning to steer students towards relevant details, themes, or narratives. Questioning is also important in challenging students to think deeper and look closer. I also believe that all students are different, and deserve an individualized approach. The importance of an initial diagnostic on the first meeting is of utmost importance in this respect.
Motivation and confidence are also incredibly important factors in learning. I try to build a positive and friendly rapport with students. I want to learn about the person that I am tutoring: their interests, hobbies, and goals. This helps me to make material relateable to them on an individual basis, and to help them hone the skills they need to meet their goals.
Overall, I see myself as a fun and dedicated tutor. I see it as my mission to help students improve their grades and scores, but more importantly, to help them develop skills and a love for learning that will serve them well beyond school.
