I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

My college education was at Michigan State University, where I completed a multi-disciplinary pre-law program in 3 years. I then got my law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. I've been a business and real estate lawyer for 40 years, but I'm now winding down my practice, and am looking for a way to put my God-given abilities to good use.
Education came easy to me - I always had an inquisitive mind, and feasted on learning everything I could about the many subjects that interested me, especially history, math and science. Yet I know - I saw first-hand in my own family, and among my colleages - that not everyone has the same natural talent or passion for learning new things, and that those who struggled to learn often got discouraged and gave up hope - they often concluded, mistakenly, that they could not learn or understand, when in fact they simply had not yet learned.
Fortunately, I was also blessed with an innate talent for breaking down challenging subject matter and presenting it in a way that helps others understand it; for years, people have been telling me I should be a teacher. [As my wife said after I coached her thru Statistics while she was getting a Masters Degree at the University of Michigan "you made the lights go on".]
So, with my law practice winding down, I am going to go where my talents lead me, and bring hope to those who thought they could not; I'm looking forward to helping "turn on the lights" for the struggling students that it is my privilege to tutor.
While I can tutor in a broad range of subjects (math, history, English, writing, test prep, etc.), I especially enjoy helping with math and history. The "elegance" of math has always fascinated me - that is probably behind my passion for it. And, I've been a history buff, especially US history, since I was a child; that interest has never diminished.
My approach to tutoring is simple: find out where the student is now - what he or she already knows and understands - find out what the student is struggling with, then build a bridge from the former to the latter, using what the student already knows to "turn on the lights" for the student about what he or she thinks she can not learn or understand.
When I'm not working, I enjoy hiking, reading, gardening, buying and fixing up houses, and travelling with my wife of 43 years.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Find out what the student already knows and what the student is struggling with, and build on what the student already knows to help the student grasp what he or she is struggling with.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask the student to show me some of his/her work, so I can get an idea of what the student understands and where the student needs help.
