Michael
Certified Tutor
Hello, and welcome to my profile! My name is Michael, and I am studying a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science at Northwestern University. I am an avid programmer, and very skilled at learning new languages quickly. I know C++, C#, Java, Swift, Javascript, MATLAB, HTML, CSS. I can also use Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. I am currently learning how to use PostgreSQL and SQL on realtime web applications.
I have tutored middle schoolers Algebra 1 and Geometry for a high school program (NHS), and have helped many of my classmates through math and computer science classes. I enjoy anything that has to do with physics, math, and computers.
A little personal information about me. I was born at 26 weeks gestation, and because of that, have swam all of my life to stay healthy and fit. Swimming has been my whole life up until college, and is still something that I enjoy as a hobby. I also know how to play the violin, euphonium and piano. I have one sibling, an older sister, who is currently a medical student at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. I have also coached swimming for about 4 years.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that the student and teacher should actively learn from each other. Especially when understanding new content, the student should teach the content to the teacher to prove that he/she fully understands the concept. The teacher, in turn, should fully accept and take into consideration the student's feedback on how they teach and their methods.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would focus more on getting to know my student, setting up a comfortable environment for them to work and asking questions whenever they want. I would also use that first session to gauge how much they actually know a subject.
