What is your teaching philosophy?

After learning about people skills, I have noticed that each individual is unique. As an educator or guide, I like to help the student develop his/her potential and become self-confident to express his/her ideas. I like to teach by example. After explaining the topic, I may ask questions to check the applicability and understanding of the subject, and provide relative examples and respond to questions if there are any. For me, teaching someone is an opportunity to continually learn and grow.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Present myself, get to know the student, and present the overview of the material that will be discussed during the tutoring.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Create good communication practices, as well as give more exercises as homework before the next session.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would do my best to understand the exact issue, and then find a way to resolve the issue in order to bring up his/her learning skill. Learning is not easy in the first place, which is why the student needs a tutor.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would ask questions to help the student be more diligent in the text he/she is reading. We could also read together, and I could ask him/her to hold up one finger when the reading is making sense. I could also help the student enhance his/her vocabulary through a variety of interactive activities.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Lead by example!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will not keep doing the work for the student in order to help the student become an independent learner. He/she has to do the work. By giving control of the process to the student, I will encourage active learning and increase the student's confidence. The learning process can be annoying and slow. Sometimes, getting things incorrect and learning from it is part of the learning process is as well. The more independent the student becomes, the better I will consider myself as a tutor.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

To help a student get excited with the subject, I would review the material more, and often and ask pop-up questions to ensure that the student is understanding the concept.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would ask questions at the end of each session, and, if necessary, give to the student homework for him/her to practice for better understanding of the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would discuss the subject with the student in a reversed role. I would ask the student to explain to me what he/she understood from the lesson.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would communicate with the student, and ask if he/she needs clarification from me in any of the material covered.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Everybody is different. I have to assess and position myself based on the student's needs, and communication is always a key factor.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books and class materials!
