Certified Tutor

I am a freshman in college who is eager to help anyone in any of the subjects that I am qualified to tutor in! I took all honors, AP and IB classes throughout my high school career and have received my IB Diploma. Therefore, I would be interested in helping out any student who is struggling or needs further assistance particularly in those types of classes. However, I am willing to work with any motivated student who is willing to learn and I will try my best to do what I can to help you succeed.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe the best way to learn is to first get a strong understanding of the basic concept, and then to build your comfort level and further your skills with the topic through practice questions. Like they say, practice makes perfect.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a typical first session with a student, I would try to get a good understanding of the student's learning style by trying out different techniques. Also, I would try to grasp the student's existing understanding of the topic and figure out with which topics he or she is struggling.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help the student become an independent learner by not only teaching the subject, but by offering advice on how I would study the subject on my own, based on personal experience, and provide additional advice/modifications to that based on the student's learning style.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The best way to keep a student motivated is to make them aware of the progress he or she has been making and show them how far they have come. Also, I would try my best to help the student not only succeed in their class, but also help them appreciate the subject itself and hopefully help the student develop an interest in the subject.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If the student has a difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would try to pinpoint the exact concept/skill that the student is finding confusing or difficult and help the student work through their confusion by using a process known as "instructional scaffolding". Instructional scaffolding is a learning process in which the support and guidance is provided in such a way during the learning process to help the student achieve a greater and deeper level of understanding than he or she would have been able to achieve on his or her own.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

If students are struggling with reading comprehension, I would first ask them if there are any specific words or phrases they find particularly confusing and clarify those. Then, I would guide them through the particular passage or reading by going through sections of it at a time, asking questions and explaining anything that doesn't make sense to the student.
