Thomas
Certified Tutor
I have 7 years of experience teaching grades K-12 and 14 years of experience tutoring students with and without learning disbilities. During this period, I have learned how to recognize and identify individual learning-personalities and common challenges students have.
I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Biology at Benedictine University and my Master's Degree in Applied Data Science at the University of Michigan. Helping others is something I have always enjoyed, and one of the ways I like to do so is through tutoring. I strongly believe in creating visual and sequential learning patterns that enable students to understand and remember their coursework more easily.

What is your teaching philosophy?
To discover and bring out every student's learning talents.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce ourselves. Listen to the student express what they currently are struggling with and what they have tried thus far. Create an assessment and study-plan for that individual student and his/her special talents.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Assist them with practicing and reviewing the material they are struggling with. Identify for them the skills they have already learned how to utilize for each lesson topic, as well as suggest new techniques they could possibly incorporate into their current learning methods. Over time, assist the development of the student's confidence as they continue to discover their capabilities. Development of the student's confidence, along with a little guidance, will allow the student to become a better independent learner.
