I earned my Bachelor's in Biology from UCLA in 2016 and am now pursuing a Master's in Biology at Cal State Fullerton. I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. My number one priority is to assist students in reaching their full potential. I mainly offer tutoring for the GRE, and I am eager to share my study tips so that aspiring grad students can also achieve a great score. I follow an efficient and interactive tutoring method, making sure students feel comfortable asking questions. Taking the time to pinpoint my students' needs and maintaining high levels of interaction are essential aspects of my tutoring sessions. Patience is a virtue, and I have tons of it! Outside of academia, I enjoy volunteering at the animal shelter, watching anime, and doing Pilates.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in teaching where communication is key. It's very important to me to understand a student's needs to be able to pinpoint exactly what they need help on. I also ensure that teaching is not only educational, but fun and comfortable too!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself and learn a little about the student, such as their hobbies and aspirations. I would then summarize the lesson plan and ask if they needed me to focus on any specific concepts.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would try not to give away answers directly to them; instead, I would initially have the students try to come up with answers on their own. I would serve as a guide that helps students, by giving hints.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would get to know the student's future goals and outline a plan for them to achieve those goals. Having a game plan and remaining organized are key.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to explain the concept in a different way. I would come up with mnemonic devices or other tricks to help the student grasp a concept. Trying new approaches rather than lecturing is essential.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

It is important to not rush a student. I would go over important phrases and keywords to point out main ideas to the student.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I've found that maintaining a hands-on teaching style is effective. Having a student feel comfortable is important as well, so they would be inclined to ask me any question they had. I want them to know that no question is a dumb question!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would encourage them to keep studying and tell them that it will all be worth it in the end. I would also make the subject more interesting by explaining concepts as basically as possible.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would show powerpoint slides to summarize main ideas, flashcards, and problem sets to test their understanding of the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would always make sure to praise them for their effort. Even if they get a wrong answer, I would let them know that it is totally fine and to spend more time practicing.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would first ask them what they struggle with and what they would like me to focus on. I would also ask them for constructive criticism on how I could improve as a tutor, in order to better evaluate their needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If a student is having a very hard time with a subject, I would teach at a slow but steady pace. I would also make sure to check their understanding frequently before moving onto the next concept.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use problem sets, powerpoint slides, flashcards, notebooks, calculators, and Microsoft Word.
