GRE Tutoring review by Neil in Los Angeles, CA
This was my first meeting with the student. We worked primarily through diagnostics on the quantitative reasoning portion of the GRE, as this is the area where we feel he can most improve. This is also the area where his prospective graduate programs are looking for him to improve, over the verbal or written section of the test. He has already set the bar very high by scoring a 315 on his first GRE practice exam, which already puts him in the 85th percentile to start. I believe this indicates that I should focus on a skills-based approach to his course of study, introducing him to methods and strategies for approaching specific kinds of questions, as opposed to a broader approach to "teach the test." I believe this approach will best reflect his already advanced understanding of the test material and the specialized nature of improving his score.

GRE Tutoring review by Anne in Los Angeles, CA
This was our first meeting. We went over the general structure and form of the test, in particular the question types and topics to expect in all three sections. We then went over a few strategies for the verbal reasoning section, including strategies for the sentence completion questions and for the reading comprehension questions. These strategies included the process of elimination; figuring out the meanings of unfamiliar words through context or roots or similar, familiar words; thinking of your own answer before looking at the answer choices; determining the mood or tone of a sentence or passage; and pre-reading by reading just the first sentences of each paragraph in a passage. We also learned and practiced the strategy of plugging in numbers for the quantitative section, applying it mostly to easy quant. comp. questions, but also to multiple choice questions.

GRE Tutoring review by Steven in Los Angeles, CA
The student and I met for our final session of tutoring (she takes the test this upcoming Wednesday). We first went over a practice test she had done for homework. The student did well on the later sections but struggled on the early ones. In all sections she struggled with running out of time, so after going over the test we focused on doing some drills to make her faster. I believe in the students ability. I am very confident that she will do well on the test.

GRE Tutoring review by Matthew in Los Angeles, CA
The student wrote two sample answers to the analytical portion of the GRE today, so we began the session by looking over them. She had a few spots for organizational improvement: putting her argument in the strongest order, keeping an eye on the best way to transition between the different points she's making in her essay, and getting a sense of what's most important at each stage in the analysis. We worked on these for half the session, then returned to some verbal and math practice questions; she is doing really well on the verbal, and has showed a lot of improvement on math.

GRE Tutoring review by Daniel in Los Angeles, CA
We met and reviewed previously covered topics to review material. The student had asked that I create some sample problems based on past material as he had gone through all the problems in his book. I thus put together problems based on topics including Substitution, Defined Functions, Inequalities, Equations, Factoring, Roots, and Exponents.

GRE Tutoring review by Travis in Los Angeles, CA
The student and I concentrated on verbal reasoning sections. We discussed strategies for memorizing vocabulary. We also talked about choosing the "best" answer, not necessarily the "perfectly correct" answer.
