I'm currently a senior at Case Western Reserve University, double-majoring in Physics and Astronomy, and I hope to earn a Master's in Education after I graduate. I've been tutoring informally all my life (ever since my younger siblings first started needing help with their homework), but my formal experience began in high school when I joined Math Honor Society and became an in-school peer tutor for the Math Department. Since then, I've also been a volunteer tutor outside of school, a private tutor in my community and, for a while last semester, a student teacher for an Astronomy class at a high school close to my university.
I typically tutor in Math and math-related subjects (like Physics!), and can tutor students at any math level through the upper levels of Calculus. I think that Math is my favorite subject to teach because there are so many different ways to present mathematical concepts to a student that one of those methods is sure to click with their individual learning style. Whether the student learns by visual representations, verbal descriptions, or analogies to a concept, my sessions usually feel more like conversations than lessons. Since English was also one of my favorite subjects, I enjoy working with students on things like essays and literary analysis. As someone who tests well myself, I like helping students to improve their test-taking skills (particularly in preparation for standardized tests).
Something else that has definitely influenced my teaching style is that I have struggled with ADHD throughout my academic career. As a result, I have plenty of tips and strategies to pass along to other students who may have ADHD/other learning disabilities, or even just difficulty with organization, executive functioning, or time management. We may be wired a little bit differently from other students, but trust me, we can manage any and all of these issues - it's just a matter of anticipating and accommodating the ways our brains might to try to get us off-track.
