What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that education is fundamental and all children deserve access to a differentiated curriculum to promote critical and creative thinkers.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would use this session as an opportunity to find out what are the students hobbies, what do they enjoy about learning, and currently what is frustrating them. By doing this it will provide me the information I need to better meet their needs.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help students become independent by differentiating instruction and using the I DO, We DO, You DO approach.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I like to make learning fun!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I figure out why the concept is frustrating and try a different learning approach. If a student was struggling with addition, but enjoyed playing soccer, I would relate the concept to that.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading comprehension relates to phonics skills, vocabulary and fluency. I would access where a student is in these areas and then work on how to back down a comprehension passage.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Every student learns differently, so success is based on the needs of that student.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I can help get a student engaged by making learning enriching and meeting them where they are. Connecting hobbies and subject content is most effective.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would use the following techniques to assess the student: 1. Talking with the student 2. Reviewing content at grade level 3. Reviewing content above or below content grade level. Once I understand where the student is when I am teaching new information, I would do check-in's to check for understanding .
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Meeting a student where they currently are helps make them begin to feel confident in new material. As they begin to understand and receive positive feedback through me and in the classroom, it would continue to build confidence.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate their needs by: 1. Speaking with the student about how the feel. 2. Pre- assessment -using content questions to show me what level they are on. 3. Using different learning approaches, and evaluating which is most effective for the student.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Being a flexible tutor who listens and observes during the lesson allows me to easily adapt my teaching style to meet my student’s needs.
