What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that the best teachers help students learn and achieve on their own. A good tutor will help students understand areas of weakness so that they can ultimately find success independently.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
On day 1, it is essential for the tutor and student to discuss big picture goals, to identify the student's short-term objectives, and to outline a plan of attack.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Students must be allowed to make mistakes. By struggling with problems independently, they will unknowingly develop strong critical thinking skills and technical abilities. The tutor is the backstop, not a pinch-hitter.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By creating a plan of attack at the start, the tutor and student can map out objectives. This way, success becomes more immediate and achievable.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Of course, the most important thing is to retain patience and to identify the specific disconnect occurring. Then, as a team, the tutor and student can hone in on gaps in knowledge or understanding.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Breaking down reading passages is critical. This way, the student can focus on the meaning of each paragraph, and can then focus more easily on the larger aims of the passage.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Building trust is critical. I explain my background, teaching experience, and goals for the student. It's important that everyone understand that both sides are on the same team.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Explaining real-world applications is a great way to increase motivation. Additionally, constructing games or novel approaches to more challenging areas of study can keep students excited and engaged.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
All lessons should be accompanied by brief quizzes that ensure that the student is learning and retaining important information. That way, on test day, the student is fully prepared.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By helping the student reach incremental levels of success, I can manage outsize expectations and ensure that confidence is built and maintained. Eventually, any student can perform at their fullest potential.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Each student is different. By maintaining a level of transparency and open dialogue, I can identify areas of weakness or concern. Then, through practice problems and one-on-one tutoring sessions, I can more fully evaluate which specific skills need improvement.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Every student learns differently. Again, through open communication, I can more readily understand whether a student requires help with organization, psychological preparation for test taking, or simply a more concrete understanding of academic materials. From there, I might construct games or practice problems, or simply offer guidance on the best way to set oneself up for success.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I think a variety of materials keeps tutoring sessions fun. I implement games, practice questions, study books, and other methods to help the student stay organized and on task.
