I believe that the best teachers help students learn and achieve on their own. A good tutor will help students understand areas of weakness so that they can ultimately find success independently.

On day 1, it is essential for the tutor and student to discuss big picture goals, to identify the student's short-term objectives, and to outline a plan of attack.

Students must be allowed to make mistakes. By struggling with problems independently, they will unknowingly develop strong critical thinking skills and technical abilities. The tutor is the backstop, not a pinch-hitter.

By creating a plan of attack at the start, the tutor and student can map out objectives. This way, success becomes more immediate and achievable.

Of course, the most important thing is to retain patience and to identify the specific disconnect occurring. Then, as a team, the tutor and student can hone in on gaps in knowledge or understanding.

Breaking down reading passages is critical. This way, the student can focus on the meaning of each paragraph, and can then focus more easily on the larger aims of the passage.

Building trust is critical. I explain my background, teaching experience, and goals for the student. It's important that everyone understand that both sides are on the same team.

Explaining real-world applications is a great way to increase motivation. Additionally, constructing games or novel approaches to more challenging areas of study can keep students excited and engaged.

All lessons should be accompanied by brief quizzes that ensure that the student is learning and retaining important information. That way, on test day, the student is fully prepared.

By helping the student reach incremental levels of success, I can manage outsize expectations and ensure that confidence is built and maintained. Eventually, any student can perform at their fullest potential.
