I am currently a M. Eng. mechanical engineering graduate student at the University of California Berkeley. I completed my undergraduate degree the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in bioengineering. I have been tutoring other students since high school and also have experience teaching engineering in a classroom setting. I especially enjoy teaching subjects that have a stigma for being difficult or unattainable and strive to change that perception. My strengths are math, science and standardized test preparation.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Slowly work through the skill or topic in multiple ways and find out which way makes the most sense for the student.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would work through one paragraph at a time and have them summarize to me the most important things that happened in the paragraph. That way they would pay attention to what was going on, and I could guide them if they did not catch all of the important details.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Listening, repetition, review, trying out different solutions, and of course repetition.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would look for something to relate the subject to that they were really interested in or passionate about. Or I would focus analogies to things that they liked so they'd have an easier time remembering.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By encouraging them along no matter if they get the answer right or wrong; it's the process of getting there that matters, and encouragement is needed.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Practice problems, notes, and videos if applicable.
What is your teaching philosophy?
The student's complete understanding is the most important thing, not how much time it takes to get there.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Have them pick out a couple of their problem areas or concepts they had trouble with so we have a place to start, and then move on from there.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would give them small goals to work on and encourage them a lot.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Ask them what their problem areas seem to be in and watch for any patterns when they're working.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would start by helping them and being really involved, but teach them strategies as to how to go about it when they are alone. I would lessen my involvement as our time together increases, and only step in when really needed.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would find a technique that the student learns well with, so it would differ from student to student.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I look for different methods and explanations to use until they completely understand the subject/concept.
