Certified Tutor

I was a NYC public school teacher for 25+ years. I taught all subjects in Elementary School, grades K-6 and English Language Arts in Middle School grades 6-8. I think all children have the ability to learn on their level. I have experience modifying lessons and helping struggling learners as well as working with students to get ahead. Throughout the years, I have had all categories of students including special needs students. For the past 6 years I have been tutoring and have had much success. All my private students working one on one, made amazing advancements.

I was a Literacy Coach helping teachers with Reading and Writing and was part of Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project. I was a mentor to new teachers helping them plan lessons, modeling lessons, time management and organization.

I am familiar with Common Core Curriculum and NYS curriculum, as well as the ELA and Math tests. Some of my strengths are study skills, writing, Literature, organization and test prep.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe all students can and want to learn. With lessons modified to meet the needs of each student, they will be academically successful. Each student is special and has gifts and talents. Getting to know each student's likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses will assure success. I also believe all students should have time to play, and the arts should be included into education.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will try to make a connection by getting to know a student and find out what they are really good at. I would share some of my relevant interests. Praise and positive reinforcement is key to building a good tutor-student relationship.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by first modeling, then encouraging the student to try it out on their own. Again, using very positive reinforcement.
