Certified Tutor

As a future teacher, I am very interested in helping students develop their academic skills. I received my Master’s Degree in World History from NYU, and am currently student teaching as the final piece of my Master’s Degree in Adolescent Education. I have highly developed writing, studying, and test taking skills, and have spent the past 2 years learning how to best share these skills with students. I feel that the most important thing for a teacher, and a tutor, to do is to work with a student to figure out how they learn, in order to tailor instruction to make use of their own personal strengths. I love working with students to figure out the ideal approach, and seeing the “Aha!” moment when something clicks.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I feel that the most important thing for a teacher and a tutor to do, is to work with a student to figure out how they learn, in order to tailor instruction to make use of their own personal strengths. I love working with students to figure out the ideal approach, and seeing the "Aha!" moment when something clicks.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A typical first session would be spent getting a sense of where a student currently stands in terms of skills and knowledge. Then, I would work with the student to figure out what strategies they have been using, and what they like or don't like about them. This information would help me to figure out what new approaches we could try, and what the next steps need to be.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I work with students to develop close reading skills in which they use specific processes of note-taking to help them identify important ideas and key themes within the text.
