I am currently a middle school Language Arts teacher in a Gifted and Talented Public School in Elizabeth, NJ. I was born in Miami, FL and moved to Elizabeth at a very young age. I was raised and educated (K-12) in Elizabeth and am honored to be giving back to my community as a teacher in such a progressive district! As an undergraduate and graduate student, I attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ. In 2008, I received my BA in Psychology and MA in Teaching in 2009. Over the course of my high school and college experiences, I tutored students in primary grades (K-5) in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Currently, as a Language Arts teacher, I meet with students individually and in small groups regularly to target specific Reading and Writing concepts/skills that they are struggling with. I believe weaknesses are strengths in disguise. With hard work and dedication, anything is possible. That is my tutoring/teaching philosophy. I enjoy getting to know my students and building relationships with them. As an educator, I try to individualize my teaching practices for my students in a way that will be relatable and understandable for them. Some students prefer visual elements in a lesson while others enjoy something a little more "hands on." Analyzing a complex text or writing an essay to a rigorous prompt are not easy tasks; however, with my help, we can complete such tasks and complete them well in no time! I enjoy teaching and tutoring because I ultimately enjoy learning. I hope you do too! When I am not teaching or tutoring, you may find me reading, working on an arts and crafts project for my home, or dancing! I love going on adventures, trying something new, hearing a funny joke or out of this world story, and spending time with friends and family.

I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I hope to help students improve their standardized test scores and their understanding of the math and sciences so that they can achieve their academic goals!

Math is my specialty when it comes to teaching or tutoring, but I have also been trained in techniques for tutoring all subjects included in standardized tests, especially the SAT.My tutoring style comes from my firm belief that a student will grow when they genuinely have their interest piqued, and the best way to do that is for their instructor to genuinely show passion and interest in the subject in order to pass that excitement on to their students.

I would like to thank you for choosing me as a part of your child's educational experience. I graduated with a History degree from Montclair State University, and I have the certifications to teach K-12 Social Studies as well as a certification for Teacher of Students with Disabilities.Next, I will briefly discuss my teaching experience. I have worked at South River Middle School as a long-term replacement Special Education Social Studies Teacher. I was a Resource room teacher for 6th grade US history students and my responsibilities included creation and modification of lesson plans according to the student's documentation. I also had to modify all the assignments according to the student's abilities and make sure that I was still pushing them in order to get them ready for high school or college. Finally, I would supplement the lesson with Videos and reading on a 5th grade level for my 6th graders. Next for my 7th grade World History class, I had to create and modify the lesson plans according to the student's documentation and again modify all the assignments according to the student's abilities and make sure that I was still pushing them in order to get them ready for high school and college. When it came to supplement the lesson, I would use videos once more and reading materials that were on a 6th grade level. I also taught an ABA World History class with all assignments, reading, video, and assessments heavily modified. For my In-Class Support classes I was the Special Education Social Studies Teacher, and my main task was to provide support to any students and with my lead teacher work together as a team to help students with the school work. Currently, I am a Social Studies Educator at Academy of Urban Leadership in which I teach Ancient Civilizations with current events as well. In my class, we also discuss how the ancient civilizations lived, what kind of technological advancements they made and what kind of political/religious ideology they had in their time period. We also discuss how geography played a role in their lives. Finally, the way I incorporate current events is I discuss how the downfall of the ancient civilizations occurred and how the current event issue is relevant to the past. During my prep periods, I also provide students with tutoring in middle school math.Currently, I can tutor any type of History class, Political, World Religion, Sociology, Geography, and or Geo-Political subjects, as well as Study and Organization skills, because I am a Special Education Educator. The reason as to why I choose these subjects is that I have a personal attachment to these courses and when teaching to the students it is very easy to relate to the subject at hand. My tutoring style is quite simple and it is the same as when I teach in-person, which is to relate the subject at hand to modern times. Secondly, I make sure the students understand what happened in the past and what were the choices made by political and religious figures that affected the course of history. Finally, I see what kind of predictions students can make for the future. When I am not tutoring and/or teaching I love to play video games, watch and play sports, and watch TV and movies. Finally, I know that my vast knowledge of being an educator makes me a perfect tutor for your child.

I am a graduate of the University of Florida, where I majored in English and minored in Linguistics. I truly love writing and have a passion for spelling and grammar. I am confident that I can help any student become a better writer.Throughout high school, I worked with a boy through his third and fourth grade years to improve his writing skills for the FCAT, the state standardized exam in Florida, which he successfully passed at the conclusion of my tutelage.Standardized testing has always come naturally to me and I scored very well on my SAT test. I would be happy to pass along any tips and tricks I can to help students score higher. My specialty is in process of elimination and strategic guessing.Additionally, I have always been good with Mathematics and Spanish. I tutored my peers in Math throughout all of middle and high school. I love Spanish and studied it for seven years (up until mid-college). One high school sophomore I helped in Spanish raised her D+ to an A!While a majority of my tutoring experience is from high school, I have had plenty of leadership experience since that has kept me aware of successful teaching methods. I was a camp counselor for elementary-aged children for four consecutive summers (2008-2012), and I was a leader and choreographer for my college dance team from 2008 to 2011.I have top-notch communication skills and a fun personality. I would be thrilled to help students achieve their education goals.

I am very excited about tutoring through Varsity Tutors. I've been a teacher for three years - one in Brazil where I taught English to elementary school kids, and two in Chicago as a middle school Spanish teacher. Watching someone learn, understand, and grow and knowing that you've helped in that process is incredibly fulfilling. My teaching style is very easy to work with. I like to see what the students know first, then work with them in a way that builds upon their strengths while tackling their weaknesses, so that they never feel left behind or confused. It's very important to me for the students to understand and be comfortable with the material, and I'd never want to push something on them that they're not ready for. It's my goal to make students feel like their voices and ideas are important, and to never be shy about talking and expressing their opinions. As far as my interests go, I enjoy photography, good food, and, especially, music. I'm also very passionate about language and the literature and culture of many different languages. Truly, I have myriad interests, and listing them all would take quite a while! I believe life is about experiencing and trying all the things you have time for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Score improvement depends on your starting point and how consistently you work with a tutor. Students typically see 10-20 point improvements over 8-12 weeks of focused study, though some see larger gains if they're addressing fundamental gaps in English proficiency. The key is identifying which sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, or Writing) need the most work and developing targeted strategies for those areas.
A tutor can help you move beyond simply taking more practice tests—they'll diagnose exactly where you're losing points and create a customized study plan that addresses your specific weaknesses.
The Reading section is where most students struggle with pacing. You have 54-72 minutes to read 3-4 passages and answer 12-14 questions per passage—that's roughly 10-12 minutes per passage if you account for question-answering time. Many students spend too long on difficult questions and rush through easier ones, losing points unnecessarily.
A tutor can teach you strategic skimming techniques, help you identify which questions to tackle first, and show you how to quickly locate evidence in the text rather than re-reading entire passages. With practice and the right approach, you can cut your reading time significantly while maintaining accuracy.
Speaking anxiety is common because you're recorded and can't revise your answers—but it's highly manageable with preparation. The Speaking section rewards clear organization and fluency more than perfect grammar, so knowing what to expect reduces panic significantly.
A tutor can help you build confidence by having you practice speaking out loud repeatedly (not just in your head), teaching you templates for structuring responses, and simulating the actual test conditions so the day itself feels familiar. Recording yourself and reviewing mistakes also normalizes the process. With consistent practice, most students move from anxious to confident within 4-6 weeks.
It depends on your timeline and starting score, but generally you should prioritize your weakest sections while maintaining your strong ones. If you're weak in Reading and Writing but strong in Listening and Speaking, spending 70% of tutoring time on those two sections makes sense. Your tutor can help you allocate time efficiently based on your goals.
That said, don't completely ignore your strong sections—students often plateau when they only focus downward. Your tutor will ensure you're using an 80/20 approach: deep work on weakness areas, maintenance on strength areas, and some time on test-taking strategy that applies across all sections.
Integrated tasks require you to combine information from reading, listening, and speaking or writing—they test your ability to synthesize multiple sources. Independent tasks ask you to draw from your own knowledge and experiences. Most students find Integrated tasks harder because they require managing information from multiple sources while also producing language under time pressure.
The good news? Integrated tasks are also the most learnable with practice. A tutor can break down the note-taking strategies, help you organize information effectively, and give you templates for structuring integrated responses. Once you understand the predictable format and practice 15-20 integrated tasks, they become significantly easier.
The answer depends on your stage of preparation. Early on (weeks 1-4), take one full practice test to establish a baseline, then focus on targeted section practice and skill-building. In the middle phase (weeks 5-8), take full tests every 1-2 weeks to apply what you're learning. In the final 2-3 weeks, take a full test every 4-5 days to build endurance and identify last-minute gaps.
Taking practice tests too frequently without review wastes time; taking them too rarely means you won't catch patterns in your mistakes. Your tutor can help you find the right frequency and, more importantly, help you review and learn from each test so you're not just going through the motions.
Look for someone with specific TOEFL expertise—not just general English proficiency. Your tutor should understand the exact format of each section, know common student mistakes, and be able to diagnose weaknesses quickly. They should also be able to teach test-specific strategies (like skimming techniques for Reading or note-taking for Integrated tasks) rather than just assigning practice tests.
Equally important is someone who understands that TOEFL preparation isn't just about language skills—it's about managing anxiety, pacing, and test strategy. The best tutors combine deep content knowledge with the ability to build your confidence so you can perform your best on test day.
