I have taught in private schools for 15 years, and enjoy working with students of all ages. My BA in Psychology is from University of California Irvine, and I earned my teacher certification through the American Montessori Society (AMS). I am comfortable with a variety of learning styles and enjoy using different approaches to help a student understand material. One of the most enjoyable things to me about teaching is the ability to give a student confidence in themselves by building upon their knowledge, providing them with problem solving skills, and ensuring their understanding of concepts.Education is a strong passion of mine, but I also enjoy traveling, cooking, snorkeling, reading, riding bicycles and playing tennis. Until a few years ago we also rode our 3 quarter horses on trails through the forest and had many adventures! My husband and I live in a small town in Washington with our youngest daughter and our dog Felix. Our elder daughter lives in Portland, so we drive to visit her whenever the opportunity arises.

Having taught full classrooms for nearly three years, I’ve found that my true niche in education is through tutoring. I’ve taught advanced ESL courses to medical doctors in Turkey in addition to teaching basic and job-focused ESL courses to refugees in Egypt, Michigan, and New York. I studied Philosophy and International Studies in undergrad while also tutoring ESL, writing, philosophy and IELTS test prep. I have an innate love of learning that I am eager to share with my students. My ESL experience has taught me how to simplify complex concepts making them accessible and providing a strong foundation on which to build greater understanding. I am a calm and caring teacher who enjoys using humor in the classroom – but who is also capable of being firm when necessary. I love working with individual students to identify their strengths, areas that need of improvement, and to create an action-plan for their success. In my free time I enjoy yoga, biking, reading, and going to comedy shows.

I received my B.S. in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University with a minor in Spanish. I am currently working toward my M.S. in Medical Sciences at Boston University School of Medicine. In college, I worked with a high school student, for his 9th grade year, focusing mostly on his biology and writing assignments. I was a research coordinator at the Marcus Autism center where I worked with very young kids (ages 2-9) with and without learning disabilities. We worked on general school-related skills and any homework they brought. In my master's program, I did a lot of group study. Frequently, this meant teaching a group of my peers who needed to see the material presented in a new way. I love learning and I want to help others love it, too. Throughout my studies, grades never just came easily to me. I was constantly working at getting better and trying to figure out how to solve problems in many different ways. With this type of experience, I want to help other students who may be struggling with a concept to get to a place where they see how fun and rewarding it can be to really understand the material. I tutor a wide variety of topics; however, my favorites are biology and anatomy. Biology is so exciting for me because it is the foundation for all of life, and helps us understand the world we live in. Anatomy is great because you are living in your own cheat sheet (your body)! When I am tutoring, I want to hear or see my students' thought processes. It's great if you can get to the right answer, but truly learning means knowing how you got there. So, I love having my students teach the concepts back to me. Outside of school, I play slow-pitch softball and I love to cook and bake.

Hi there and welcome!I am ready to help you with your learning journey. Being a life learner and continuously working on yourself is crucial to your success. I believe that a positive attitude can allow anyone to learn anything. In all I do I always find a way to make it work! My teaching philosophy reflects that. I approach teaching with different strategies that complement my student's learning preferences, ensuring that all learners obtain the necessary tools to reach their learning goals.I began my learning journey at Arizona State University with a bachelors in Civil Engineering. I attended Tulane University for my Masters in Business Administration and while finishing that I also obtained my Professional Engineering license in Arizona. My background is in construction and consulting. I've always enjoyed doing arts and crafts, painting, and design so a few years after my MBA, I decided to undertake some creative design projects that lead me to take a few college courses. Unbeknownst to me at that time, those courses turned into passions and two Associates degrees: Web and Graphic Design + Interior Design. I'm fascinated with merging the technical with the creative. I believe we are the creators of the world around us!I'm passionate about teaching and have extensive experience teaching ages ranging 3 years to adult learners. I've taught 10+ years and developed curriculum for my church's children ministry. I began my second career as an adjunct professor at a community college and have been teaching 7+ years - graphic design, Adobe Illustrator + Photoshop, WordPress, Microsoft Suite, Information Systems, 3D design/printing, app design, and coding. I was awarded the 2020 Outstanding Adjunct Award, 2022 NISOD Award, and earned a Credential in Effective College Instruction from ACUE. I have substantial experience with public speaking and have presented at conferences and workshops. I enjoy traveling and have had the opportunity to study abroad.Let's get started!

After four years of engineering school, one thing I've learned is that teaching is hard to do. Every student learns differently and for those of us who can't instantly understand advanced concepts and apply them in the real world often feel frustrated and left behind. In a way I still am one of the those students but I've found through hard work and some clever strategies that it is possible for anyone to be a successful student and a lifelong learner.I have spent many years working with other students to pass on the skills I've acquired so that they too may find success. I have worked extensively with grade school children in the areas of math and writing through my participation as an assistant teacher with the Visions 2000 Math & Reading Academy. For five summers I worked with far below and below basic students to get them back up to speed in time for the coming school year. Additionally, while attending USC I worked with inner-city children to pass on my engineering knowledge with the Iridescent Learning program. There I designed lesson plans that would explore the wonders of engineering and each lesson culminated in a hands of building challenge of my own design. With all this experience I hope to continue helping children achieve their goals by being patient and understanding of their individual needs. I truly believe that anyone can learn and hope to hear from you soon!As an engineer my math skills have been constantly stressed and my extensive coursework has taught me excellent ways to approach how we think about numbers in both the physical and imaginary space. When working with students my approach is to pinpoint what core concepts they are struggling with and then work to introduce new ways of thinking that will allow them to describe the concept in their own words. This method gives students a sturdy base of knowledge that can then be applied to a variety of practical uses and I feel it to be the most effective way of teaching.

As an undergrad at New York University, I am working towards my Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Since graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School, I have tutored high school students in algebra and trigonometry and helped prepare students for the SAT. I am also a Jumpstart Corps Member and spend a few days a week providing preschool children in low income communities support in language, literacy skills, and social-emotional competencies. While I have experience in a broad range of subjects, my favorite subject to tutor is math because of the systematic methods involved. My job as a tutor is to provide resources for my students and to guide them when they need help. I believe that the best kind of student is one who wants to improve as much as I want to help them. There must be effort from both sides. In my spare time, I like to knit and do other DIY projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Varsity Tutors' Other category covers a broad range of academic subjects beyond traditional core areas, including test preparation (GRE, GMAT, LSAT), professional certifications, specialized academic subjects, and skills-based courses. Whether you're preparing for a standardized test, need help with a niche subject, or want to develop specific academic skills, we can connect you with tutors who specialize in these areas. Each tutor brings expertise tailored to your unique learning goals.

In a classroom, teachers typically pace instruction for the average student, which means some students move too quickly while others fall behind. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to adapt their teaching to your specific learning style, speed, and needs. Tutors can spend extra time on challenging concepts, skip material you've already mastered, and use examples relevant to your interests—creating a customized learning experience that leads to faster progress and deeper understanding.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors across all skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced learners. Whether you're starting fresh with a new subject, preparing for a major exam, refining specialized knowledge, or aiming for mastery, tutors can meet you where you are. During the matching process, you'll share your current skill level and goals so you get connected with someone experienced in helping students at your specific stage.

Research shows that personalized 1-on-1 instruction significantly boosts learning outcomes compared to classroom-only instruction. Tutors help by breaking down complex material into digestible steps, identifying and addressing specific knowledge gaps, providing targeted practice, and offering immediate feedback. This focused, responsive approach accelerates progress and builds confidence—especially valuable for challenging or specialized subjects where students need expert guidance tailored to their unique questions and learning pace.

Getting started is straightforward. Simply share your subject, current skill level, and learning goals with Varsity Tutors. We'll match you with a tutor who has the right expertise and teaching style for your needs. Once matched, you'll work with your tutor to set up a schedule and begin personalized instruction. Many students see measurable progress within the first few sessions as tutors tailor their approach specifically to how you learn best.

Yes. Varsity Tutors understands that students have packed schedules. You'll work directly with your tutor to find session times that work for both of you, whether that's early mornings, evenings, or weekends. Most students find that even consistent 1-2 hour sessions per week produces noticeable improvement. Your tutor can also adjust frequency based on your progress and upcoming deadlines or exams.

Good tutors track progress through multiple measures: improved scores on practice tests or assignments, deeper understanding of concepts you previously struggled with, increased confidence when tackling difficult material, and better performance in actual coursework or exams. Your tutor should regularly check in on what's working and adjust the approach if needed. Most students notice concrete progress—whether that's higher test scores, clearer comprehension, or greater independence with the material—within the first month of consistent tutoring.
