Recent STAAR EOC Tutoring Session Notes
For today's session we went over a reading assignment that was given to her prior to our session. It covered plot structure and required her to pull other additional elements in order to answer the questions. We also went over another selection that covered indirect and direct characterization. At the conclusion of our session I went over her essay and short answer prompts for Monday. We discussed how to brainstorm, construct a thesis statement, and use supporting details. We also talked about using the essay prompt and background info provided to help make your essay better.
During this session, we worked on homework from her other tutoring. She had a question packet and two essays to finish and turn in the next day. She said she was having trouble understanding the concepts in the questions, but it turned out she was just overwhelmed. We went over the concepts - drawing conclusions, cause and effect, making inferences, etc. - and she was able to define them all with little prompting. We made notes on the pages so she could remember them for later and moved on to the essays. I helped her plan for both the expository and persuasive essays she was assigned. She had some vocabulary trouble with the prompts, but once she figured out what the prompt was asking, she planned both essays fairly well. I left her well prepared to write the essays later.
This was our first session. We discussed strategies that could help the student overcome her comprehension struggles. We also looked at how she approaches terms she doesn't know. We walked away with three goals

We covered the state assessment Writing section, emphasizing theme, tone, and perspective. She struggled most with perspective and comparison questions. She seemed more confident as the tutoring session progressed. I gave her three additional state assessment practice sections to work on for our next session.
The student and I went into an articulate discussion of quadratic functions and equation forms. We talked about what a parent quadratic function is and what it describes and is used for. We briefly reviewed slope-intercept form to assure she has mastery in this area, and she does. We discussed what a domain and range means and how it is represented in quadratic systems. The last 25 minutes of the session we did prep work for the biology assessment exam, the primary focus being cell anatomy. She needs to review cellular organelles and their functions for our next session. She is progressing well and seems to be building confidence.
The student and I worked together on a portion of a practice placement test. I gave her test taking strategies. She is a much better reader than I had anticipated. She is a hard worker who wants to face her challenges head on.
