I have had many Math professors throughout undergrad and graduate school and I have found that, although they all know what they are talking about and are all very intelligent, what makes a math teacher great is understanding that not everyone understands things the same way he or she does. Throughout my years tutoring all levels of mathematics, I have developed the ability to readily explore several different viewpoints and methods to help students fully grasp the subject matter. I can present the material in many different ways until we find an approach that works and makes the material easy to understand. Nothing gives me a greater thrill than the look of relief on a student's face when they actually start to "get it" and realize that it is not as difficult as was previously believed.I have a Master of Science degree in Math, over three years' experience as an actuary, and am a member of MENSA. I am highly committed to students' performances and to improve their comprehension of all areas of Mathematics.

I received my BS in Biology/Ecology from UCSD in 2011. I also earned a minor in English Literature. I moved to Oakland in 2013 to attend graduate school at SFSU where I earned my MS in Ecology Conservation Biology. I did my thesis studying social behavior and disease in salamanders! In the past I have done research on everything from sea turtles to birds and bugs, and have been lucky enough to travel to lots of cool places like Thailand, Panama, and Costa Rica to work on conservation projects. I work as field biologist.My husband and I moved to Portland in March 2018 and are excited to make it our home! Outside of work I love outdoor activities including hiking and camping (especially with our chocolate lab, Riley). I also love to bake, craft and sew, and do yoga.I have been tutoring for about 7 years now, working with students grades K-12 in a variety of subjects including math, science, reading comprehension and test preparation. My favorite subject to tutor is math, because when I was younger it was something that I struggled with until I got the right help. Now I like to give other students that same opportunity to reach their potential. I love helping students get excited about learning and boosting their confidence in subjects they might not have enjoyed before. When working with students I like to help them find what learning techniques are best for them. I myself am a visual learner, and I usually use this as a starting point, but I love to adapt based on students' personal needs.

I've been a high school physics teacher for the past 15 years, and also a strong advocate for equity in science education. I received my undergraduate degree in Physics from Amherst College, and later a masters degree in Science and Math Education from UC Berkeley. While I've always had an interest in science, I've come to see myself as someone who teaches *people* rather than *science*. That is, I really enjoy helping students become more confident & independent learners, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. I feel honored to be a part of any students' growth. :)

I am currently attending Hofstra University, where I'm majoring in Pre-health Studies with a Concentration in Disability Studies. I have had experience in the past, as I tutored students during high school. During my free time, I enjoy reading and playing tennis.

Teaching at the university level has enlightened me to the learning modes of both high school and college students. As an instructor of Freshman composition at Baruch College and Brooklyn College, I taught essay writing to students who were in an in-between state: not quite full-fledged college students, but eagerly ready to leave high school and its rote ways of thinking behind. In the first weeks at Baruch, I realized something very important: we are always a little in-between places, and we do not altogether leave the "old" house when we move into the "new." I increasingly understood teaching to be less about the introduction of new knowledge, then creative ways of re-appropriating what we already know. In short, I became a fan of recycling, finding out what my students knew (always a surprising amount), what worked for them, and then coming up with improved ways of merging those effective strategies (at writing an essay with a thesis statement, for instance) with what were time-tested and worked well for me.As a tutor for standardized tests, I do the same, but also draw upon specific literary-minded questions that I asked on a routine basis as an Instructor of World Literature. The one I think is most relevant to the SAT and other standardized tests asks, "what is the author not merely saying with his or her words, but doing with them"? When we put ourselves in the shoes of the test-writers, not just the shoes of the test-taker, a lot becomes really clear about how to succeed at taking tests without really trying (so hard). This said, I am also a believer that the amount of time you put into anything is proportionate with the results, and study really does pay off when it comes to APs and SATs. Study can also be fun, and I make an emphasis on how a slight change in approach to the materials covered on these tests can transform hours of drudgery into a playful, good time.I come from a background in academia where I was a Ph.D. student in English Literature (CUNY) and editor. It goes without saying that I love literature! Some of my favorite works are Moby-Dick, the poems of Gwendolyn Brooks and Emily Dickinson, the lyrics of Bob Dylan, and anything by James Baldwin, Kurt Vonnegut, or James Joyce. I hail from the Midwest where I earned a BA with Honors from the University of Michigan and studied Englisn Literature and American History. In Ann Arbor, I also honed my historical trivia when I competed on academic bowl, which is like Jeopardy, but with teams.

At the Metro Achievement Center in Chicago, I tutored middle school students for a year and high school students for two years to improve academic performance by setting semester-long and weekly academic goals, social-emotional learning goals, and improving study habits. Throughout the year, the students I tutored and I tracked progress and saw that students improved academic performance as a result of gaining social-emotional and academic tools. I have tutored and graded college students' work with the University of Illinois at Chicago for 3 and 1 year. Thus, I am familiar with the content and expectations of algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, and Calculus 1, 2, and 3. Overall, I have challenged students resulting in a deeper overall understanding of content, an increased understanding of expectations and how to meet them, and increased self-confidence regarding their ability to do mathematics.I am completing my final semester at the University of Illinois at Chicago to earn a Bachelor's of Science in Teaching of Mathematics at the secondary level. I will receive my licensure to teach mathematics in high school during the summer. I've been passionate about robotics, engineering, and technology since I was a little kid. My education was a major part of my upbringing and who I am today, so tutoring seems like a good way to give others the same support I received.Few experiences have been as rewarding as sharing my passion for science and tech with kids as a robotics camp counselor. Seeing children get excited to learn about programming, design, and problem solving the same way I did at their age with my old legos was amazing.Right now I'm looking to tutor in mostly STEM subjects, and though the website won't seem to let me check the box, I also speak conversational spanish.

I have taught for 14 years working primarily with special education students in 1st through 6th grade. My favorite subject to teach is math. For the last 4 years I have taught 6th grade regular and accelerate math in middle school. I have taken some time away from teaching to care for my toddler but would love the opportunity to tutor students in the meantime.
