I have been tutoring off and on for the last 20 years and love it! Teaching students to see math in everyday life and take away the fear that is associated with the subject is something I am very passionate about! I have obtained a BS degree in Mathematics from Biola University and a BS degree in Civil Engineering from UC Irvine and have tutored elementary math and Algebra, all the way up to Calculus 2, Statistics and Physics. I am very experienced at learning the best way each student learns and to switch up styles to meet their needs in the best way possible. My other passions are sports, particularly baseball and hockey, I love hiking and other outdoor activities, working out, music and photography! If you want a tutor that is passionate about helping others to learn and to enjoy math, then I am the tutor for you!

I was introduced to teaching while pursuing, and eventually completing, my Ph.D. in analytical chemistry. Teaching in a lecture setting was a largely impersonal process. I wanted to teach in a setting where the student was comfortable asking questions, which is not an easy task in a large classroom.Teaching for me has always been more rewarding when doing so in a one-on-one setting. In this scenario, I can easily tailor the lessons to the needs and pace of the student.Teaching with Varsity will allow me to teach the way I like to.

I am a fourth year student at Harvard Medical School, and will start working as a pediatrician in July of 2016. However, if I had not decided to become a physician, I would have strongly considered becoming a teacher. Teaching is one of the most enjoyable activities I do, and I have taught in some capacity every year for the past ten years. I have taught subjects ranging from English to algebra, from physics to dance, and have taught students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. I have also provided advice on application essays, resumes, and interview strategies for Harvard College students applying to highly competitive scholarships. Each of these experiences has taught me how to communicate concepts in clear and engaging ways. For instance, while tutoring adolescents enrolled in the Boston-based Artists for Humanity program, I would often teach students whom I had never worked with before, and thus became adept at quickly discovering and implementing the strategies that worked best for a particular student (e.g., visual/tactile examples, analogies, and breaking down complex problems into smaller parts). While tutoring a janitorial staff member in preparation for the mathematics portion of her GED high school equivalency exam, I learned how to quickly identify the highest yield topics for a standardized exam and focus our efforts on those. Each of these experiences has been incredibly rewarding, and has inspired me to teach in some capacity throughout my career as a doctor.

My name is Howe. I graduated from Wesleyan University in May, and I recently moved from New York to West Philly, where I am very excited to be working with Varsity Tutors. I love being able to work with students in a one-on-one setting; for students to truly grasp difficult concepts, they must be able to discuss the material freely with their teacher, which is rarely possible in a classroom setting. For writing especially, one-on-one tutoring is essential to developing one's skills. As a Varsity Tutor, I hope to not only strengthen students' writing and academic performance, but also make them feel more confident in their ability to learn.

An African man once said "If you want people to understand you, speak their language." I am fluent in 3 and a half languages. The reason why I say 3 and a half instead of 4 it is because the fourth one is not practiced as much as I would love to. Born and raised in Haiti (Central America), I automatically grew up bilingual speaking both Haitian Creole and French. At the age of 8 I was already proficient in English, by the age of 12 I was introduced to Spanish. In 2007, my family decided to move to America due to political problems. Adjusting to the American culture took me some time, but I quickly understood it because I already spoke the language. Foreigners I encountered throughout my path in life were always eager to speak to me because I understood them in a way that others did not simply because I spoke their language. The power of understanding someone else's language is amazing and can build lifetime relationships. I am here today to help you speak my language so you can understand me and my culture better.

I believe every student has the ability to learn and thrive. This belief drives my teaching. I have eight years experience tutoring full-time at the community college remedial level. I have also volunteered as a tutor for underprivileged middle school and high school students. I am comfortable tutoring those who are gifted as well as those with learning disabilities.I tutor a wide range of subjects, but am most passionate about Computer Science, Math, and Test Prep. These are all subjects in which a student can feel completely lost or stuck. In my experience, the small steps which can easily be gained in these subjects make a huge difference. The results are noticeable and applicable.I am a lifelong learner and am always reading/learning new things. I love theater, knitting, and technology. I am a graduate of Rowan University and Montclair State University earning a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Education and a Master of Arts in Theater Studies.

Frequently Asked Questions
A tutor provides personalized feedback on your writing that goes beyond what you might get in a classroom setting. They can work with you on the specific areas where you struggle—whether that's developing a strong thesis, organizing your ideas, strengthening your argumentation, or refining your writing voice. Through one-on-one instruction, tutors help you understand the "why" behind writing conventions, not just the rules, so you can apply these skills to future assignments.
Grammar is the foundation—correct punctuation, sentence structure, and word usage make your writing clear and professional. Style, on the other hand, is about how you express your ideas: your word choice, sentence variety, tone, and voice. A strong essay needs both. Tutors help you master grammar mechanics while also developing your unique writing voice, so your essays are not just correct but engaging and persuasive.
Writer's block often happens when you're trying to write the perfect essay on the first try. Tutors teach strategies like freewriting, outlining before drafting, or breaking the essay into smaller chunks so you're not facing a blank page all at once. They can also help you move from confusion about your topic to a clear thesis statement, which gives you a roadmap for the rest of your writing. Many students find that talking through their ideas with a tutor helps clarify their thinking before they even sit down to write.
Organization is where many essays fall apart. A tutor helps you build a logical structure by identifying your main argument, organizing supporting points, and ensuring each paragraph connects back to your thesis. They teach you how to create outlines that serve as blueprints, how to write topic sentences that guide your reader, and how to use transitions that show the relationship between ideas. With practice and feedback, you'll develop the ability to organize complex arguments clearly on your own.
Yes. Citation formatting can feel overwhelming, but tutors break it down into manageable pieces. Whether you need help with MLA, APA, or Chicago style, a tutor can show you how to cite sources correctly and help you understand the purpose behind proper attribution. They also help you integrate quotes and paraphrased material smoothly into your essay so citations feel natural rather than awkward—and your arguments stay strong.
Literary analysis requires you to move beyond just understanding what happened in a text to understanding how and why the author created meaning. Tutors help you develop close reading skills—identifying literary devices, understanding themes, and analyzing character motivation. They then guide you in translating these observations into a coherent argument with specific textual evidence. This turns your analysis into a compelling essay that shows deeper engagement with the material.
Revision is where good essays become great ones. Rather than trying to fix everything at once, tutors teach you to revise in layers: first looking at big-picture issues like thesis clarity and argument strength, then moving to paragraph organization and transitions, and finally polishing grammar and style. They also help you develop self-editing skills so you can evaluate your own work critically. With this strategic approach, you'll learn to revise efficiently and see real improvement in your writing.
