I have obtained a BS degree in Mathematics from Biola University and a BS degree in Civil Engineering from UC Irvine and have tutored elementary math and Algebra, all the way up to Calculus 2, Statistics and Physics. I am a freshman at Amherst College with hopes of double majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. I recently graduated from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, NC. This is my first year being a tutor through Varsity Tutor so I cannot wait to start working!During high school, I took Honors Math II and III, Pre-calculus with Advanced Topics, and AP BC Calculus with Advanced Topics. I was introduced to teaching while pursuing, and eventually completing, my Ph.D. in analytical chemistry. Teaching in a lecture setting was a largely impersonal process. I wanted to teach in a setting where the student was comfortable asking questions, which is not an easy task in a large classroom.Teaching for me has always been more rewarding when doing so in a one-on-one setting. I am a fourth year student at Harvard Medical School, and will start working as a pediatrician in July of 2016. However, if I had not decided to become a physician, I would have strongly considered becoming a teacher. Teaching is one of the most enjoyable activities I do, and I have taught in some capacity every year for the past ten years. I have taught subjects ranging from English to algebra, from physics to dance, and have taught students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. I have also provided advice on application essays, resumes, and interview strategies for Harvard College students applying to highly competitive scholarships. Each of these experiences has taught me how to communicate concepts in clear and engaging ways. For instance, while tutoring adolescents enrolled in the Boston-based Artists for Humanity program, I would often teach students whom I had never worked with before, and thus became adept at quickly discovering and implementing the strategies that worked best for a particular student (e.g., visual/tactile examples, analogies, and breaking down complex problems into smaller parts). While tutoring a janitorial staff member in preparation for the mathematics portion of her GED high school equivalency exam, I learned how to quickly identify the highest yield topics for a standardized exam and focus our efforts on those. Each of these experiences has been incredibly rewarding, and has inspired me to teach in some capacity throughout my career as a doctor.

My name is Howe. I graduated from Wesleyan University in May, and I recently moved from New York to West Philly, where I am very excited to be working with Varsity Tutors. I love being able to work with students in a one-on-one setting; for students to truly grasp difficult concepts, they must be able to discuss the material freely with their teacher, which is rarely possible in a classroom setting. For writing especially, one-on-one tutoring is essential to developing one's skills. As a Varsity Tutor, I hope to not only strengthen students' writing and academic performance, but also make them feel more confident in their ability to learn.

An African man once said "If you want people to understand you, speak their language." I am fluent in 3 and a half languages. The reason why I say 3 and a half instead of 4 it is because the fourth one is not practiced as much as I would love to. Born and raised in Haiti (Central America), I automatically grew up bilingual speaking both Haitian Creole and French. At the age of 8 I was already proficient in English, by the age of 12 I was introduced to Spanish. In 2007, my family decided to move to America due to political problems. Adjusting to the American culture took me some time, but I quickly understood it because I already spoke the language. Foreigners I encountered throughout my path in life were always eager to speak to me because I understood them in a way that others did not simply because I spoke their language. The power of understanding someone else's language is amazing and can build lifetime relationships. I am here today to help you speak my language so you can understand me and my culture better.

I have also volunteered as a tutor for underprivileged middle school and high school students.
