I graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 2010 with a BA in French Language and Literature and a minor in Russian language and literature. About a year after I graduated, I was accepted to a program, run by the French government, to teach English in France. I spent a year in the eastern town of Belfort helping French students ages 15 - 20 with their English grammar and pronunciation. While there, I took advantage of the school holidays and traveled to several different European countries. After my contract finished, I spent two months traveling through Spain. My favorite subjects to tutor are literature based, as that is where my interests lie. I enjoy discussing books with my students and helping them realize the subtle nuances of the author's language. I also enjoy helping my students with their own writing, helping them find their unique style. For test prep, I enjoy the English, Reading and Writing portions and try to help my students do the same. I believe the more a student enjoys something the easier it will be for he or she to progress.

I was home schooled from first grade through twelfth. Up through eighth grade, I studied from the curriculum of Calvert School, a private liberal arts school in Baltimore Maryland. I am a graduate of Covenant College, a small liberal arts college in north Georgia. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in both Philosophy and Mathematics. My studies in Philosophy focused on metaphysics, philosophy of language, and logic. I received a Master of Science in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. After that I went to the University of Arizona to work on my PhD in Mathematics. I studied for three semesters, passed my qualifying examinations, and then decided to switch career paths. I am currently in a dual Masters program at Georgia State University studying Actuarial Science and Mathematical Risk Management in the Robinson College of Business.I have been private tutoring high school and college students in mathematics since 2007. I have also tutored post-college students in GRE preparation and in preparation for teaching Calculus 3. While continuing my studies I have had the opportunity to serve as a proof reader for the term papers and statements of purpose of other students. I also have experience of guiding a student through the process of writing a paper from scratch. This in particular was very rewarding.Mathematics is beautiful. I was led to it initially by its mystery, and I was drawn further by glimpses of its beauty. I enjoy tutoring Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-calculus, and I get even more excited about the calculus sequence and the material that follows after it.For each student I tutor, I try to find out what motivates them. I am not someone who believes that advanced mathematics is something that every person uses on a daily basis. But I know that mathematics is older than writing and has emerged in every major civilization, and I believe that everyone can learn to see its beauty. Furthermore, I believe that mathematics is something that is learned by doing. As such, I tutor mathematics by leading the student with a series of guided questions. I aim for a balance between the abstract and the concrete by using several examples and asking the student about what patterns they notice. My personal interests include choreographed dance (particularly ballet and modern), reading (fiction and non-fiction), theology, world events, tech startups, and entrepreneurship.

I first became interested in tutoring and teaching during my undergraduate at Lee University. My first experience was teaching improvisational theatre to a group of high school and middle school students. Quickly I realized that I had a gift and passion for education. I would go on to work for a semester as a teaching assistant at Western Carolina University. I taught college freshmen in the American History seminar.I received my BA in History from Lee University in 2016. While attending Lee, I discovered one of my other passions, comedy. Currently I perform improv comedy and stand-up weekly in Chattanooga. In addition to history and comedy, I enjoy writing, reading (especially modern American Literature), and listening to folk music.I am excited for the opportunity to work with students who are ready to learn and value critical thinking and knowledge as much as they value test scores. While I do think test scores and grades are crucial to continuing education and reflecting the progress a student has made, gaining knowledge and learning how to think critically about what is learned is equally crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions
A tutor provides personalized feedback on your writing that goes beyond what you might get in a classroom setting. They can work with you on the specific areas where you struggle—whether that's developing a strong thesis, organizing your ideas, strengthening your argumentation, or refining your writing voice. Through one-on-one instruction, tutors help you understand the "why" behind writing conventions, not just the rules, so you can apply these skills to future assignments.
Grammar is the foundation—correct punctuation, sentence structure, and word usage make your writing clear and professional. Style, on the other hand, is about how you express your ideas: your word choice, sentence variety, tone, and voice. A strong essay needs both. Tutors help you master grammar mechanics while also developing your unique writing voice, so your essays are not just correct but engaging and persuasive.
Writer's block often happens when you're trying to write the perfect essay on the first try. Tutors teach strategies like freewriting, outlining before drafting, or breaking the essay into smaller chunks so you're not facing a blank page all at once. They can also help you move from confusion about your topic to a clear thesis statement, which gives you a roadmap for the rest of your writing. Many students find that talking through their ideas with a tutor helps clarify their thinking before they even sit down to write.
Organization is where many essays fall apart. A tutor helps you build a logical structure by identifying your main argument, organizing supporting points, and ensuring each paragraph connects back to your thesis. They teach you how to create outlines that serve as blueprints, how to write topic sentences that guide your reader, and how to use transitions that show the relationship between ideas. With practice and feedback, you'll develop the ability to organize complex arguments clearly on your own.
Yes. Citation formatting can feel overwhelming, but tutors break it down into manageable pieces. Whether you need help with MLA, APA, or Chicago style, a tutor can show you how to cite sources correctly and help you understand the purpose behind proper attribution. They also help you integrate quotes and paraphrased material smoothly into your essay so citations feel natural rather than awkward—and your arguments stay strong.
Literary analysis requires you to move beyond just understanding what happened in a text to understanding how and why the author created meaning. Tutors help you develop close reading skills—identifying literary devices, understanding themes, and analyzing character motivation. They then guide you in translating these observations into a coherent argument with specific textual evidence. This turns your analysis into a compelling essay that shows deeper engagement with the material.
Revision is where good essays become great ones. Rather than trying to fix everything at once, tutors teach you to revise in layers: first looking at big-picture issues like thesis clarity and argument strength, then moving to paragraph organization and transitions, and finally polishing grammar and style. They also help you develop self-editing skills so you can evaluate your own work critically. With this strategic approach, you'll learn to revise efficiently and see real improvement in your writing.
