DAT Survey of the Natural Sciences Tutoring FAQ
For most pre-dental students, the Dental Admission Test (DAT) Survey of the Natural Sciences is the most anticipated part of the exam. Typically, you'll face this section first on test day, and it's easy to understand why most students feel confident about this section. You have likely spent the past several years facing a battery of advanced science classes, laboratories, and examinations. If there is something that you feel confident about, it's probably a test on the natural sciences. It can be a surprise to you, then, that the DAT Natural Sciences section looks nothing like what you would expect. Unlike an in-class exam on the endocrine system or olfactory pathways, your DAT Natural Sciences exam is a standardized test. It asks you abstract questions that rely only on basic science concepts and you must apply these concepts in complicated ways to answer the questions correctly. As a result, you need to prepare specifically for the DAT Natural Sciences section, and not simply trust that your past few years of coursework will be adequate preparation.
Your DAT Natural Sciences score can be a huge asset to your overall score, but only if you prepare properly. You must develop your test-taking skills just as you have developed your scientific skills over the past several years. This proper preparation does not involve pulling out stacks of old textbooks or class notes; rote memorization through this study format will get you almost nowhere on test day. Instead, you need to work with a resource that is designed specifically for the DAT Natural Sciences exam. Even better is a personal resource that can offer advice about the exam's idiosyncrasies, as well as the ability to specifically cater to your needs and weaknesses in order to maximize your study time investment.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with personal DAT Survey of the Natural Sciences tutoring. They have educational directors available to work with you to create a detailed student profile. This allows potential tutors to view your needs, which can be a big help in quickly determining if they would be a suitable tutor for you. Your profile can provide information like your testing date, proficiency, testing concerns, schedule, and more. Armed with this information, your tutor can create the basis for a fully personalized tutoring plan that keeps you on track to achieve your testing goals.
Each DAT Survey of the Natural Sciences tutor has excelled on the Natural Sciences portion of the exam, and has been carefully selected for his or her outstanding ability to both master the material on the exam and to communicate it in a clear and enthusiastic way. You can see much more of a return on your time investment with a resource like a personal tutor compared to a generic review book or mass-market review course. In fact, your personal tutor can arrange your sessions around your busy schedule to ensure that you are able to handle all of your responsibilities. If you need to meet in person at a local setting or prefer face-to-face online tutoring sessions, you are free to ask for whatever will make your sessions more convenient.
As one of the most important parts of your dental school application, your performance on the DAT cannot be overstated. With DAT Survey of the Natural Sciences tutoring, you can likely make substantial progress far faster than you may expect, which can leave you time to focus attention on other obligations. You can't focus your entire life on the DAT when dental school admissions committees are also looking for volunteer experience, clinical exposure, and community involvement. Make your dental school application stand out in a variety of ways with the help of private tutoring. Contact Varsity Tutors' directors today and get started!

Recent DAT Survey of the Natural Sciences Tutoring Session Notes
We began by reviewing several small issues that the student had in chapters 16 / 17 (word problems in one and two variables). After this, we discussed Triangle-related issues and worked through some of the pertinent problems (chapter 27) as well as Mean, Median, Mode problems (chapter 21). I likewise discussed some introductory points on standard deviation. I assigned 21 and 27 as well as another 20-30 problems in 24 (graph interpretations) and reading comprehension through problem 56.
The student and I met for our second session of tutoring. For this session we focused on the writing section. The student wrote two essays, first an analyze an issue essay which I scored at 4.5. Then an analyze an argument essay which I scored at 5. These scores indicate that the student already has a strong grasp of the writing section and should do well on the section.
We worked on properties of fractions: multiplication, division and combinations thereof. We also looked briefly through her collection of GRE books to identify priorities for her Christmas break: number properties first, then algebra, then geometry, then solving word problems.
The student and I did a video chat session since she is in a different city. Her studying for finals has kept her from devoting as much time to the GRE as she would like. We focused a lot on vocabulary and on practice verbal reasoning questions.
The student and I worked on math this session and she is showing improvement. On the problems that she did previous to our meeting she got over half right, which is a big improvement!
We began the session by reviewing the two practice tests the student took during our break apart. She only had a few questions about some of the math, but felt good about the rest, so she's feeling more confident about the material. Geometry questions in particular, which previously proved difficult, were much easier for her. Then we segued into a brief review of some of the algebra from last time, and the coordinate geometry and probability. In our final session we will not discuss content very much, except where needed, but will focus on strategies for writing the essays and general test-taking skills.
